After a bit of local discussion about the NSW speed record, I have attempted to put together a list of the top speeds (2 sec) achieved in NSW. The list is compiled from GPSTC and only includes NSW team members who have posted Doppler data with a 2 sec run of over 39 kt. Only the highest speed for each person in shown.
It is clear that Primbee and Budgewoi are the places to go for speed.
There are perhaps people from outside the state that should be included in the table.
Have I missed any one?
Great list....i wish you your cutoff was 38.5.....
You forgot the King of Yesteryear
Sam Parker
Primbee and Budgy just represent the development of weed bank sailing over the last 5 yrs, guys like keef and leo played a big part of that down south in the early days
I remember people would be pretty harsh on Leo in the early days....its too shallow, its not worth it.....they all now sail weed banks
Leo also with Micky developed and started to uncover budgy and its potential
For us at budgy, the development of the delta has been a huge plus
There was guys going fast before weed banks,
Sam, Rick ( who stills sail ....very very fast) set some good speed at taren pt speed strip, narra lakes weed bank, foreshore drive, i think they broke 40 plus at all those spots
Sam has a 46 plus at sandy but i think he may have a 44 on nsw waters?
I just though i shoukd add craig hammond played his part in the history of gps speed sailing in nsw, sailed a lot up here or down south with Leo, and did break forty on nsw waters.....he broke 40 and stopped sailing
Chris from narra lakes, mickys late friend Booger, Larko, Conan, keef, sam, rick murrary, micky, bushfire, have played a big part in the history of gps speed sailing in nsw,
They have traveled, shown dedication and stuck at it in the earlier days, they have inspired many over the yrs and all reached great speeds......
The scene right now in NSW is great, there is heaps of dedicated speed sailors all reaching great results
The reinvention and come back of Walshy is looking Awesome, already got top speed at Budgy
Dont forget harrington , Byron has done 41.99 , and 40.8 there , And I just missed out on cracking my first 40 there . Huge
potential but does not happen very often .
As I said I have only listed the top speed for each sailor and for Bryon that is 42.08 at Budgewoi.
I looked at Sam parkers listings but most of them didn't specify the location and were not Doppler results.
It is clear that Primbee and Budgewoi are the places to go for speed.
Dont discard Harrington , Just sayin
Or taren pt
Or foreshore drive.....
You can however completely disregard Lake Macquarie. ......thank you
Actually, budgy has had sailors on it for the last 20 years.me included.and we sailed on the big sand without deltas.but short of a man made canal its the next best thing.
Great posts all. But don't count out the best of the best..........................Lake Dangerous!!!!!
At very very select times (once in a decade) it can produce the ultimate conditions for speed sailing. Lots of 40's done there on the Pipeclay Point sand spit in a honking WSW. Now these days the awesome spots mentioned are more accessible, easier to sail and shallow.
Downside to LD, super short runs, moving sand bars, gustiest wind on the planet and takes awhile to figure it out. Lots of guys in NSW have had some great sessions there.
Great topic boys.

Were talking more about gps history, which is about 10yrs back
Of course people have sailed Budgy before that, micky and co were sailing 25yrs ago anyway
In terms of gps history, micky, leo and hammond started to open up that weed bank
Keef and leo were already modifying vector fins to look more like deltas long before deltas came out
From what ive seen in the last 10 yrs, Leo and Hammond with keef doing fins played a big part in developing shallow weed bank sailing in nsw
Of course up here and down south the locals also jumped on and thats where we are at now....
Most sailors that were already up and running put crap on leo, saying its not real sailing, too dangerous blah blah, thats why they deserve the pioneer tag, because they kept pushing themselves admist the criticism from the more established sailors....who have all been left behind or eventually shut up, ate humble pie. ...and now sail weed banks as well
While investigating the rules for shallow water sailing (I got pinged for rounding a mark on foot yesterday) I came across this.

But now you agree with me Adriano I'm going to have to change my mind and say the sentence is not ambiguous.
Though it is a bad sentence in several places. It could be improved by taking out the word "minimum", replacing "over the whole" with "anywhere on" and replacing "below" with "less than".
It's strange that despite sailing's general reputation for rigorous interpretation, protest and enforcement of rules, that in an official speed sailing event at Luderitz they turn a blind eye to this one.
