My GT31 is frozen again ,this has happened before.

Last time it recorded about 15 minutes on the card and the next hour was not.
This time it recorded nothing to the card.
This is probably the 3rd time it has done this, but it is fine the rest of the time.
It gets frozen ON,and both the toggle and the on/off switch don't respond,it also won't charge when it is plugged in.After the battery runs flat then it can be recharged and it then works fine(well it did the last few times anyway).

I did have it in a very tight case previously and thought it might have been pressing the toggle down for a long period, perhaps upsetting it,but now I have it in a looser case.
Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Really annoyed this time as I had a super session, fastest person on the water today, none of the adults could keep up with me today-first time I have been able to match them and should have got 3 or more PB's

Wow you are quite young to up so late!

Anyway I did a bit of a search and found the following threads relating to freezing GT-31s.

Have you tried to get data from the internal data logger? My GT-11 is a bit dodgy with the card reading/writing but the data logger is quite reliable. This probably won't help if the whole unit froze up but its worth a try.

To prevent toggle button being accidently pressed just lock the buttons.

My response from the thread Moby linked above

After downloading the new patch firmware (V1.3 B1123T) my initial freezing issues (see below thread)seems to be resolved. www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=57586&SearchTerms=dreaded,freeze
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=58243&SearchTerms=GT-31
I have now sailed 100+ sessions since update and it hasn't frozen (yet)

Lyn and I had massive problems with our GT-31s freezing, but it is all a distant memory now.
My advice is to follow the following instructions...
You will have to go to Tom Chalco's website and download the firmware.....
V1.4 B0803T

=====================================================================
Procedure for upgrading firmware in GT31 (by Tom Chalko, approved by Locosys)
Version 6 May 2010
This procedure is faster and safer for your GT31 than previously published procedures.

1) Install GT31 Upgrader V0.71 (or higher), if it is not installed already.
Installation file is included in the zip file
2) Install USB-to-serial driver, if it is not installed already
3) Clear Data Logger before upgrade (DATA LOGGER>CLEAR>YES)
4) Close all Windows applications and disconnect from Internet

5) Turn GT31 off
6) Remove the SD card and find a tiny sliding switch "inside the card slot" on the pcb,
on "display side" of the card slot. The switch has a black lever and metallic body.
The default position of the switch lever is labelled in white on pcb.
7) slide the switch lever using a match or a similar object
8) use GT31 Updater V0.71 in "internal" mode to load 2 files, one at a time:
a) V31BOOT_V4D.s (you only need to update this file when upgrading to V1.4 from V1.2 or V1.3
b) V1.4 firmware
It may be necessary to quit and re-start GT31 Upgrader V0.71 after the first file update.
9) when Updater finishes, disconnect GT31 from USB cable, move the switch lever to its normal position,
labelled white on pcb.

GT31 should be ready to use.

I am too young to be up so late! (that's why I have "people" doing this for me )

We only have a Mac so we had to use my grandmother's IBM in the end. Have now managed to upgrade the firmware and it seems to be working again - thanks for the help! Once you've done it once it is easy but the first time it's a bit tricky. We're going to Sanctuary Point for a week so we're hoping it will be OK from now on...
