To begin i want to mention that my english is not so good and I do my best to explain it as clearly as possible.
Now that Garmin has released the software is it possible to write apps and activities for it. Now I posed the question on the Garmin forum if anyone can write this activity i have explained what the rules are for speed surfing. Unfortunately, there is no response , I get that because since it is a lot of calculation. Now I hope that if more people respond that someone gets motivated and want to try. So my question is, therefore , if you 'd like to have the activity please respond to the Garmin forum.https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?202123-Windsurfing-activity
Cheers,
Nathan
If everything goes well, then I'll do at least the 5x10s for the Garmin 920xt and Garmin vivoactive. The SDK offers a lot more than the Ambit one, so there might be more possibilities in the end.
I should get one this week. I'll do a simple data field first similar the way the Suunto Ambit apps work. Also have to check whether it is at least as accurate as the Ambits.
This is really great super that you for taking this initiative to. I hope they can adapt so that the gps can be measured every second. This should first be approved by Garmin before it can be used?
And do you like your watch?
Yes, I like it a lot! The display is very easy to read on the water and in the sun. I can see numbers a lot better than with the Ambit while windsurfing.
There is no problem with the Forerunner 920XT: It has GPS updates every second and also saves them into .FIT files every second. The .FIT files can be uploaded to www.ka72.com directly and loaded into GPSResults directly. So I'm very happy with this. The numbers in the watch matches very well with the resulting numbers from analysis software.
I think I can upload the apps to the Garmin App Store next week. They are ready but I just have to take some screenshots and write some description.
Currently just the vivoactive (another Garmin watch) has a problem. It updates GPS every second and displays numbers correctly every second, but the .FIT files contain information every 2-6 seconds. This is because it is using smart recording.
It looks like a good alternative for my next GPS. Thanks for working on the App1
I was hoping the vivoactive would work as it claims 1s refresh. Shame about the recording...
The Wind/Kite Surfing Datafield for the Garmin Forerunner 920XT, epix and vivoactive has been published:

Hi Guys, I like what I see, and many thanks for getting the software done for our sport. Just wanting to know are these Garmin products now a part of our GPS Challenge? I have read the rules on the GPS site, and have also noticed where I sail some others using different GPS products! I'm looking at replacing my GT-31 as its wont hold full charge. Cheers
Garmin .FIT files don't have any SDOP or other speed accuracy values, so I guess it won't be a full replacement for the GT-31. But the GP3S crew has evaluated it and on the GPS speedsurfing site you can choose it now from the list when uploading tracks. Similar to the Canmore GPorter 102+.
In speed days I usually have the watch and a backup GPS with me. Usually the GT-31 or Canmore GPorter 102+. On normals days I just use the watch.
...... I'm looking at replacing my GT-31 as its wont hold full charge. Cheers
I'll give you $10 for the old dud GT-31!

I don't think the .FIT files contain any satellite data either.
Can you confirm if the speed data is from Doppler?
If it is than I would probably be on a par with the Canmore device, i.e.: Suitable for beginners to the sport bit not suitable for those who are high in the rankings as possible errors are not able to be verified in the data.
The Gold Standard is still the GT-31.
It appears as if the GW-52 will also fill this role after more testing to confirm.
The Thingsee One has the potential to become the new Gold Standard.

Not wanting to tread on anybody's toes here, but have you tried a complete discharge then recharge? ie just leave it on until it's dead, then plug it in until it says it's fully charged.
That worked with my old GT11.
Now what idiot has red thumbed Sailquick's above post????
It's stating that the GT31 is still the gold standard for econmical, verifiable accuracy.
Sure there are cheaper units, there are units more user friendly, but none of them store the info needed to verify the data. If this isn't important to you, then you don't come into the catergory that are serious about rankings.
You're right. The .FIT files don't contain any satellite data.
I cannot confirm that the speed data comes from Doppler. I can try to find out and report back as soon as I know.
So far the speed values of the fr920xt have been slightly lower than the ones from the Canmore. Also when filtering points out in GpsAR (I used <2.5m/s2), then there are usually 0 points filtered out. I also haven't seen those peaks or sawing as with the Ambit tracks yet. So it seems to work pretty well.
For those who are high in the rankings I also wouldn't recommend to rely just on the watch. I could imagine that most of them have more than one device with them anyway, just in case one of them fails.

Now you've done it!
OK, $30 then.

Thanks for the info Fin151.
What you report is slightly contradictory to expectations. The slightly lower speed readings would suggest Doppler data, but the rejected points in the filter are more associated with the variation in trackpoint speeds. It will be interesting if you can find out.
Well done on producing this app Nathan.
any updates from users on their experience with the app and/or 920 watch?
looks pretty cool to me
At least from looking at the reviews from:
apps.garmin.com/en-NZ/apps/b820a772-e335-406a-85b7-2ac6a0e5b61a
People seem to like it. 1027 have downloaded it so far. I use it all the time and it's nice to see the 10s of the current leg right after the jibe.
At the beach or sometimes on the water I check the screen that shows all 5 10s numbers to see if there are for example "two bad" ones (not green) and I should go out again and improve the 5x10s.
Not trying to hijack this thread but for those interested in the watch solution for track recording but are a bit put off by the price there is a cheaper option than Garmin .
Sean Hogan has a TW 100 and is very happy with it , says it even gets reception under wetsuit (that surprised most of us). Canmore was bought out by TSKY last year. Some products keep the old name.
So are the TW watches also programmable, so that they could show 2s, 10s and 5x10s for example? Or the current 10s after a gybe? The Forerunner 920xt btw has a screen resolution of 205x148 not 160x100 and weights 61g not 72g. So I assume that the info on the table is not quite right. It also costs USD 329.99 nowadays.
All the watches mentioned here: apps.garmin.com/fi-FI/ can run the Wind/Kitesurfing app (except the vivoactive is not suggest since it does not support 1-sec recording). The cheapest one of them is the Forerunner 230 USD 249.99.
I like the Canmore a lot. It would be nice if they could show the 5 best 10s or so in a future firmware. I tried to write them a couple of times, but never got an answer.
I know it's not on that list, just wanted to confirm the Garmin 910XT wasn't compatable with that app?
You are right. The 910xt is not compatible with the app/datafield. All Garmin devices that support "Connect IQ" can run it. Currently they are:
developer.garmin.com/connect-iq/compatible-devices/
I think the vivoactive is the only one that has just smart-recording. All others should support 1-sec recording.
So I have the 920XT and have downloaded the App,\
umm, so what do I do to actually see the app or fields on the watch. I have spent a couple of hours trying to work it out, Garmin are not intuitive :(

So I worked out to set the data field on the watch screen, had its first outing today, liked it thank you.
Now that the session is finished how do I actually review the results, the session has uploaded to Garmin Connect, but this only displays the original fields for that activity?
Cheers.
Yes, it is a datafield. I usually do a 1-field layout on the first screen and put the windsurfing datafield into that one. You can plugin in your watch with the USB cable and then it shows up as an external disk and you can go to D:\GARMIN\ACTIVITIES and pick the file with the date from your session. The .FIT file can be uploaded directly to www.ka72.com or analyzed in GPSResults V6.144 for example. Gps Action Replay doesn't support .FIT files (yet?). Or if you have Garmin Express installed you can synchronize and then download the track in .gpx format from your Garmin Connect account.
EDIT: with Garmin Express you can register WLANs for automatic upload. I registered the one from work and the one at home. So whenever I come to work or home after a session, then the track gets uploaded automatically to Garmin Connect and I can just download it for further analysis.
Another question if that's ok...wondering how to find the peak speed and 5 * 2sec?
Upload to Garmin Connect and the max speed is the highest of the 10sec speeds, not the 2sec peak.
Upload to ka72 and it doesn't show the 2sec or the 5 * 2sec.
I didn't look at the watch screen before I ended the session so wondering if there is some way to access?
Cheers again
www.ka72.com shows for example those values (www.ka72.com/Track/t/159048):
2 Second Peak (kts):33.684
5x10 Average (kts):30.339
Top 5 5x10 speeds: (1)31.527
Top 5 5x10 speeds: (2)30.621
Top 5 5x10 speeds: (3)30.555
Top 5 5x10 speeds: (4)29.598
Top 5 5x10 speeds: (5)29.3931
Hr (kts):10.913
Alpha 500 (kts):18.803
Nautical Mile (kts):16.425
100m peak (kts):32.63
Total Distance (km):27.813
Garmin Connect just shows the average speed and the maximum speed. Unfortunately Garmin Connect is not able to show numbers from custom datafields. But the .fit files can be used with www.ka72.com or GpsResults.
I think only GpsResults can show the 5x2s. Usually the 5x10s is shown. You can GpsResults here: www.gps-speed.com/download_e.html
Do you have the link to your track on www.ka72.com?
PS: I made a program that can upload .fit files to www.movescount.com and it shows the 5x10s and the 10s for each leg. The track above looks like that on Movescount: www.movescount.com/moves/move77097452
You can click the buttons like 5X10S or LAST 10S below the graph to toggle individual graphs. I like that quite a lot.
The program is not released yet though.
Yeah, I uploaded to ka72 and 2 second peak shown as 0.
I have used Garmin Connect for 4 years with the 910XT, so am reasonably familiar with it, but on my first outing with the 920 XT, Garmin Connect showed a max speed which was approximately the 5 * 10 speed which was 5 to 6 knots slower than the peak speed for that session, definitely not the peak speed. I set the data fields to the open ocean swimming activity if that makes a difference.
How do I get the link to my track on ka72?
It was a 40 min session but the fit file only seems to be about 6kb??
