Is this the sandbar you're sailing behind. Is that a natural formation? What sort of wind, wave, tide, estuary action causes that? The last time I sailed at Mallacoota was about 1978 in a javelin dinghy.
What wind direction is needed to sail behind the sandbar? It looks fantastic for flat water sailing with clear wind.
Edit:
Just Google Earthed it, looks like a SW wind is best plus a boat would be handy to get there.
Best direction is SW for speed runs or S for runs in both directions
Sandbar comes out higher on low tide. Need a boat to get out there but boys have sorted some deal out with hire company if anyone wNts to give it a crack
Hi
Is that Goodwin sands? Better keep an eye out for monster flat heads.... I have a unit in Mall, might have to kick the tenant out and start goin back there ...
Cheers tony
Nice video, thanks for the ride!
I used to sail there in the early 90's, on a windrush storm 10 and dacron sails!
I would launch from Karbeethong, and just sail over.
Actually I seem to recall mentioning this flat water run in this post from 2005:
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/General/mallacoota/
I remember I used to (early 90's) sail out and back from Karbeethong, and one day I went further than usual and got into the flat water behind Goodwin Sands, and thought - "hey this is cool, going fast on really flat water". Unfortunately GPSTC wasn't around then, and if it was a GPS was a dinosaur of what it can do today.
Happy times in 'coota though.
EDIT: just read my old post, I said the lower lake was good for everything except easterlies, I'm sure I meant westerlies. (too offshore)
