my gt31 version 1.2, fw B1405, 2gb sd card has trouble. It has worked great in the past 2 years till a few sessions ago. I use Mal Wrights paid Real Speed. I turn gps
on at start of session and off before I drive home. When I check the session now I see a list of tiny files, sometimes 2 per minute. A fragmented mess. Help please.

Sounds like the card writing side of things is acting up. If its anything like my GT-11 it will create a whole bunch of little files with no data. The GT-11 will also chirp saying card found, creating new file many times.

If this is the case the consensus is the card reader contacts are not making firm contact with the card. I made a thread about this and one responder advised that he sent his GT-31 back to Locosys and they fixed it for about $50. I modded my data card with a bit of glue so it would get better contact.

This worked okay but not for long. So now I rely on the data logger to record my data. Its working well. I can still write the data from the logger to the card.

I've seen two cases this week where data from the logger was not complete. In both cases, sailors had extended sessions (more than six hours), and the logger was not able to capture the whole session. Can't remember what the exact limit is, but some people hit it these days (seems to be around 16,000 points, which is about 4.5 hours if you have no min speed setting, and are recording 1s points.)

Just be aware of that, especially if planning on sailing extended sessions or several sessions over one or two days.

Hi Dylan,

I used the data logging function on my GPS last Sunday and I uploaded it to your site. I don't think there were any issues and I'm pretty sure I was out there for over 5 hours, but having breaks in the middle. I kept the GPS on all the time. I think I got going around 11am and finished up a bit after 4pm.

try to reset to factory default, and than put firmware you actually must have, v1.4
first flash boot to 1.4 then put latest 1.4
all guides here http://mtbest.net/setting-up-navi-GT31.htm
also try with different card as well

All new GT31s have V1.4 installed by default. Locosys states that "eventually" all GT31 units should have V1.4. Locosys also says that there is no need to upgrade to V1.4 if version that you currently use satisfies your needs.

First thing when you buy GT is latest firmware, how you can have 1.2 without all usefull options and all improvements so far ???

Thanks for all the suggestions. We upgraded the firmware over the weekend and Mick reports that the unit is now working a lot better.
