Have been sailing for quite a long time but haven't ventured into GPS usage and would like to start measuring how I am going, speed wise, sort of looking for PB's , distance, etc.
What are the recommendations for a basic GPS unit that maybe?? won't get a lot of use? I guess depending if I get hooked or not! Don't want to spend heaps. Had a look and can't find any 2nd hand units here on Seabreeze.

Thanks & cheers!!

Best unit for windsurfing is the GT-31, and why not join the GPS Team Challenge (GPSTC) and make new friends, I was just offered a gps on the GPSTC coz I thought I'd lost it, see if i can hunt it down for you

Noticed this one on seabreeze the other day. I found the GPS a great tool for improving me sailing and being part of GPSTC is also great fun, there is always someone that you compare numbers with which just makes me want to improve further. I guess GPSTC creates some good friendly competition

for basic data like max speed, total miles, average moving, plus current speed and navigation to waypoints I am using a garmin e-trex, really cheap, about $130 new. it also keeps in memory your session, but you need a serial cable to download it to your pc, no memory card.

The GT11's are now obsolete. The GT31 is it's replacement.
You might as well get the GT31 if buying new.
Ebay has em for about $50 less than the shops in Perth, but it's always good to shop local and supprt the WA windsurfing industry.

Don't discount the value of having a local shop set you up with one in terms of local support and advice. If you can't get a good deal from a local, though, or if you have no locals (!) I bought our original GT-11 from www.storagedepot.co.uk who also supplied SD card and aquapack at the time at a reasonable combined price. (Their list price, before shipping, for the GT-31 is presently under $150AU, and they will ship a GT-31 plus aquapac to Australia for under $180AU)

Locosys had a list of distributors at www.locosystech.com/en/index/index.html which includes a lot of other websites, but when I'm shopping for my next one, I'll be tempted to go back to storagedepot. (Especially with the exchange rate so favourable.)
