We had a pretty average day at Sandy Point today with a continuation of very broad conditions and not a whole lot of wind. It was only low 20's and very broad which means a lot of walking and pretty hard to crack 40 knots.
Then just before dark we spotted a black line of cloud heading our way and we gathered at the top of the course to wait for it. I grabbed the CA40 and put my weight jacket on (4kg - hopeful thinking?) and we waited. Tom and Ian had a few false starts but when I felt a few spits of rain and a gust I decided that was it and went for it. As I got out from behind the dunes I knew it was going to be a good one. The sand was flying and I was accelerating hard. Just before I got the the best angle the squall hit with full strength, probably 35 knots and I was right on the edge with the sail and forced to bear away a bit and go with it. That quickly took me into uncomfortable territory in the chop but the speed felt great so I hung on. The gust eased a bit and I tried to tighten up a bit to get back on the bank, hoping for another run close to the sand but as I got there it was obvious the gust had eased so after 100m or so I pulled in. Rapt to see the big 45 knots on the dial again! Yeeeharrr!!!!!!
Those few seconds in that squall made me instantly forget the frustration of the rest of the day. All I could think about this evening was that short, phenomenal burst of speed!

It also confirmed something else I had been thinking. All we need is a classic 35 knots day with WSW wind and there should be a lot of PB's racked up. We are all geared up and waiting.........

Bring it on!!!! More, More!

PS. Guess what Kato? The wind came around to the perfect WSW just after dark and is still blowing 35+ knots! at 1am Aaaarrrrrggggghhhh!

You're definitely right Andrew. A good blow and heaps of PB's will happen. It's been what - best part of two years since the last round of big PB's and the gear and our knowledge has gone leaps and bounds. Just think, even I bettered my PB lest week in shifty 20-30 knots short and broad. Just imagine what that 35-40 knot SW blow could offer.

SALIVATING!
