***Very Important information***
1/ This coast run is NOT AN OFFICIAL EVENT. Your participation is entirely at your discretion and entirely at your own risk. There are no fees, forms, officialdom or obligations. (only the promise of a cold drink at the end)
2/ It is very strongly recommended that you read, comprehend, and follow the suggestions below:
a/ Wear a Buoyancy vest ASA Type 1 or 2 – Certified for offshore/ocean use (usually bright yellow or orange).
b/ Carry a smoke flare, in good, dry condition and preferably in date. This should be taped in a waterproof bag and attached in an accessible location on your vest. (Taped to shoulder strap is usually appropriate). Ensure you read the instructions for the use of your specific flare, and do not use your flare unless a genuine emergency situation exists.
c/ It is highly recommended that a mobile phone is carried in an appropriate waterproof, Aquapac style, bag during your run, or at the very least, take 40 cents.
d/ Organise a “buddy” to stick with you for the run.
e/ Ensure you are fit enough.
f/ Ensure you are an experienced and capable ocean sailor, and are familiar with negotiating shore breaks.
g/ That you are able to self-rescue.
h/ That your equipment has been checked and is well maintained.
i/ That you expect no pre-organised assistance if you have difficulties.
j/ Any transport logistics for the run are your responsibility.
k/ If there happen to be large red flags flying at Swanbourne – STOP IMMEDIATELY – it means the rifle range is active.(the range is not scheduled to be used on Sunday the 3rd but there are no guarantees – obey the flags and only the flags!)
l/ Be sure to let someone know what you are doing and when they can expect to hear from you/see you.
m/ This is not a race but if you want to be competitive – rally some mates and get yourselves organised.
n/ Leave from Leighton and stop at the windsurfing spot at Scarborough – just South of the Scarboro Surf Club.
o/ It’s 16km as the crow flies and there are long stretches of rugged coast if you come ashore – expect to walk a fair way if you haven’t organised a phone and some transport.
p/ Cottesloe Beach buffer zone – All sailors must keep clear at all times from the Cottesloe area maintaining a minimum distance of at least 200m – Swimmers frequent this area and this is a Cottesloe Council Requirement.
q/ Warning about the Swanbourne Area – This is an isolated area of the Coast – if you are struggling - stop before Swanbourne-Nedlands SLSC. This may save you a very long walk. The Rifle Range and SAS barracks are off limits – walk up or down the coast to avoid this area.
r/ Basic Distress signal – to alert anyone that you require urgent assistance – wave both arms up and down repeatedly - out to your sides.
s/ Do not sail further offshore than you are happy to swim – this is important. (500m is considered excessive as per Fisheries Department rulings)
t/ The waters on this stretch of coast can be challenging to sail – choppy with large shore breaks – practice and be prepared.
u/ Finally Remember – You, and only You, are responsible if you come along.
All that said… – it should be great fun…
Get everyone and anyone you know who might be interested to come along.
Catch you at Scarborough for a coldie and a chat….
