After an 3 year year absence due to Covid, it's back on again: the USA 100m speedsailing challenge. www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=event&val=799 The search to find the fastest speedsailors and locations in the USA returns.
The USA may be a large country but there's very few locations where speeds over 40 knots have been recorded. There's also very few speedsailors who have gone 40 knots on waters in the USA.
For 2023 the competition is back, who's the fastest and can anyone go over 40 knots over 100m. Any sailor from anywhere in the world is welcome to enter, only rule is gps 100m speed to measured by doppler approved devices and the location has to be in the USA. So if any speedsailors plan on visiting America this year feel free to sign up and put the hammer down. Do you feel the need for speed?
HISTORY
In 1988 speedsailing was one of the most popular forms of windsurfing competition. To grow the sport in the USA event organizers decided simplicity was the key and 100m courses were a practical alternative to the 500m ones used overseas.
The US Boardsailing association became involved and sanctioned the results over 100m. From a practical point of view there were more locations in the USA where 100m courses could be setup. Both the organizers and US Boardsailing were right, by 1991 there were over 500 sailors posting 100m speeds in the US Boardsailing sanctioned Ken Winner Jantzen Speed Series.
In 1993 the overall 100m USBA record was set at 44.45 knots at Lyle behind the Klickitat River sandbar; a record that stands to this day. In all over 1100 windsurfers participated and had 100m rankings from 1990 to 1995.
The fastest 100m GPS speed was set in 2009 at ARooBar on the Columbia River, WA, USA, it has yet to be bettered.

Very cool. Does it run the whole year? Fins and sails only :)?
Runs all of 2023 through to end of December. Yeah fins and sails as it's hosted on GPS-Speedsurfing.com
Now if you can get a foil over 40 knots for 100m I'd be happy to include it!
What do ya need Aroobar in the US for Roo ?
great to see the event starting again ,lets hope for a windy year ahead .

I sure you can go a bit quicker over at Haskins/Flying Tigers. Hook up with Kipps for some speed tips and a training partner. Then when you come up to the Gorge in Summer you can crack 40 knots easily! I'm sure I can dig out a speed board for you to scare yourself on.
A little bit of USA Speedsailing history from the glory days in the Gorge in 1993 when the 100m record was set.

I think that 32 was when you went airborne ;)
Looks like Kipps did 35knots 100 at haskins last year, but he is a long way a head of us. We might need to roadtrip to hit 35knots I reckon

A quick trip up North to the Gorge and you guys will be hitting 40 knots by lunchtime. At least 4 places on the Columbia River you can go 40, if an old guy like me can do it then you younguns are shoeins! Let's see what you've got.
Best of luck with your plans and hope Huey delivers Kean!!!
Appreciate your support, if you're ever in this neck of the woods be happy to show you around and get in a few sessions.

35 is totally doable at Haskins (Andrew Anderson and Kipps have done it)
as well as these other Bay Area spots where 35+ have been recorded:
* Bodega Bay
* Sherman Island
* Crissy Field (you need to be very lucky to get the conditions for it)
* Pillar Point Harbour (southerly storm winds)
35 should also be doable at Candlestick, but not sure anyone has done it "officially" (i hear Davide has, but haven't seen it posted);
also closer in distance than the Gorge, there's Lake Isabella (to the south), and Washoe Lake and Pyramid Lake to the east (40 has been done at Pyramid)
mind you, i'm not discouraging a trip to the Gorge. but you can get good practice in the Bay Area
then take that practice to a good setup at the Gorge and smash FORTY!!

Looking forward to some good speeds from the Bay Area this year, I hope @WindFlyer can get everyone motivated and bring them up to speed!

Great to hear @WindFlyer. The race is on to find the fastest windsurfer in the USA for 2023. Season just starting up here in the Gorge. How soon until the first 100m run over 40 knots is posted this year? We've got 7 speedsailors entered in the challenge so far from around the country. www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=event&val=799
A list of 40 knot locations in the Gorge. Klickitat River Sandbar, Lyle. The sand has filled in more on the eastern side of the bank so the angle isn't as deep off the wind, still good for 40knots though!
Hood River Sandbar, Channel course. The original course inside the sandbar is too shallow and has too much debris to be safe. Run is along the outside heading towards the bridge. Over 40knot runs here last year.
