My GT-11 is slowly dying due to water getting into it. The data logging function still works but it won't reliably write files to the SD card.
There was a thread a while a go about what we want in a revised Locosys GPS. I think having a 100% waterproof GPS or having a waterproof case available for the GPS, similar to the waterproof housing for my GoPro should be a priority.
I sent an email to Locosys and a sales rep advised me to use a waterproof pack so it does not look as though they have plans to develop a more waterproof gps.
I've heard the 'water proof' rating is for less than 1m submersion in still water.
If you hit the water at 30+ knots, I doubt the water would be very still.
The GT-31 site says to always use a bag when sailing!
Unless your keen to replace frequently.

Yes I use a Pacaqua which is alright but again is not 100% waterproof. If I had not used a Pacaqua I doubt my Navi would have survived its first dunking.

IPX7 is tested in the still water for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter.
We do strongly recommend our surfing customer must wear it to prevent from the impact during this type of extreme sport.
My point is at least one other device out there, the GoPro camera has an extremely good waterproof casing system. Its likely that GoPros will last a very long time and won't be damaged by seawater. On the other hand how many Navis do we hear about dying from moisture? I know one bloke who replaced his GT-11 after a couple of years and he always placed it in his aquapack and a plastic ziplock bag. He said the interior electronics were completely corroded.
I've had further communication with Locosys. They seem to be a good company to deal with. The sales rep said the Locosys engineers will have a look at the GoPro waterproof casing system.
If they developed a similar type of case for the GoPro it would be a major improvement for the Navi series durability and longevity. So here is hoping!
Locosys seem OK to deal with especially when you factor in english is their 2nd language and sometimes the meaning is lost in the translation.
The 1m water resistance allows you to get the unit wet. Make sure the card cover has "clicked" when it has been shut. Water inside an Aquapack or Paqua will form water vapours(steam)inside the pack in the sun.
GT's ARE NOT STEAMPROOF.
Keep them out of the sun in dry packs when possible for a long trouble free life.If the pack leaks dont stress just keep it cool so you dont get steam in the pack.
Well my GT-11 seems to be soldiering on despite injury. The sign of a true champion. The onboard data logger works well and I can write the results to the card. I'll keep it going till it goes kaput. Hopefully that happens later than sooner, unless the Australian dollar tanks.
My GT11 turned itself off after 50nm of my 74nm. good job I was also wearing a GT31.
I presume the battery is on the way out, but haven't done any testing yet to find out.
