I came across this today and started thinking about its application for speedsurfing, i know you can not see your max speed, distance and such live but it would be very accurate data. I'm relatively new to this what do you all think? Would the downloaded data be accepted on the speed sailing sites?

Didn't the fly sigh developer show interest in actually developing a unit for speed sailing? I'm sure once that goes through and all the necessary bureaucratic steps are taken to get it approved, than you can buy it!

I'm afraid this unit is not going to work. It's not just 10 Hz that is required, but also the ability to read the measurements in doppler speeds and their accompanied doppler speed errors is what we need. The unit you posted uses an MTK GPS module which do not output that information. Thanks for bringing it up though, someone might uncover a gem sooner or later =)

dBA is correct. This logger has some of the things we need (10hz and internal logging) but unfortunately is missing some very essential ones. (Doppler speed and Doppler speed error logging).
AFAIK, the MTK GPS chipsets are not capable of outputting the raw data we need. The one we have looked into only output in NMEA format which does not include the Doppler error data.
Moreover, positional data has been proven to be nowhere near accurate enough for accurate speed calculations (the WSSRC approved Trimble survey grade GPS claim to get 10cm accuracy using differential GPS correction and post processing, this is not possible with consumer GPS chips).
The only consumer GPS chipsets that we know of so far that are capable of outputting the raw binary data we need and doing it at up to 10hz (or possibly faster!) are certain U-Blox chips. eg, U-Blox 6
One manufacturer that uses these chips is Wintec, but unfortunately they have shown no interest so far in modifying their firmware to suit us.
