Is anybody interested in this endurance race? It would be cool to form a NSW team. It looks like a good fun and safe event and the Victorian guys are helpful. I was there on Friday and Saturday. It was looking like Saturday was going to be it but it didn't happen. There is still time to enter. jerzyfilatow.wixsite.com/home
Here is some info.
1. Carpark at the start of the race
2. first leg Bonbeach to Ricketts (headland in the distance)
3. safety gear plus the phone I'm holding which has the follow mee program loaded (flares optional)
4. you need a helment!, this is a hat not a helment.
getting there info
yesterday I drove from albury to northern beaches in just under 6 hours. I didnt stop once and I set the cruise control to the speed limit or 1 or 2 k over. I used the M2 and M7. the M2 is wider now and Holbrook is by passed. It is probably the easiest drive in Australia. On my way down there I used the M5, big mistake on that day!
Going to Melbourne I like drive to Albury or Seymour and sleep the night and then tackle Melbourne fresh and go straight to the race. Actually I reckon its best to arrive a day before as you'll find Port Phillip Bay takes a bit of tuning in with its unique chop. The event has a red, amber and green traffic light system. When it goes green you have 48 hours to make the start, i think. Better check that with the race committee. Actually check everything I say with the race committee
Currently we are on Amber, which is on hold.
Flying is a option but I remember Barbara Kendall (gold, silver and bronze medalist for NZ) telling me in back in the nineties, 'fly into frankfurt get a car and never fly with your gear'. the same applies here I reckon.
Hi Justin,
Did you enjoy the Melbourne sail, looks like typical Melbourne weather.
The Carpark is empty? no one else on the water that would of been a bit lonely on that bay unlike Botany Bay.
There's that gangster hat again.
Anyway good effort getting down there.
See you on the water possibly tomorrow.
Kind regards
Walt
Oh I spelt helmet wrong
It was 9am in the morning so the carpark was empty. I was doing a trial run of the course but the wind was too light and I slogged the 10km to rickets!! It too a long time. After we set up at Elwood
Elwood Sailing Club
Hey JustinL, AUS4's right, Elwood does look a bit different. Started windsurfing there. Great spot.
Been great hearing about the Downwinder on Vic thread, but really love the NSW perspective. hope you get a team.
Cheers, BCo
I remember the Elwood SC been bigger but I guess it hasn't shrunk. It was a pretty active club, A-class cats (non foiling) windsurfers and other classes. There is a car park to the right of the photo.
