Hi I haven't sailed for about 7 years and only on and off back then.
I had an old Tyronsee slalom 115 litre. I just purchased a s/h gastra matrix 7m sail and new severne mast and extension. Also just Picked up a s/h jp super sport 124. I took it for a quick test run at runaway bay today. Board was great much better than the old one. Only problem was had a fall and damaged the front of the board. So back to the old board until I can get it fixed.
I live in Beenleigh area any suggestions for good sailing spots
that suit someone starting out. I'm still learning to gybe. Can beach start but not waterstart.
Thanks
I'd target Thompsons Beach at Victoria Point, we use west side of Yeo Park (Kiters eastern side).
Good for learners and all types. Good friendly bunch and just intro yourself and ask questions.
Welcome back!!
Went sailing Tuesday at manly took me a while to get going. Once I got my balance in the chop I had a couple of runs. Got some new harness lines today as the old ones were too short. I managed to hook in few times also had a few falls need more practice. Overall was an ok day but feeling sore after a couple of catapults. Hopefully will get out again on the weekend see how the wind goes.
Water was lumpy and wind was really gusty when you were there so you did well. It got much better later on as the tide turned the water flattened off and the wind settled down.
The original car park is closed but i now park at Nev Howards fishing store car park. The lovely Gold Coast council charge $1.90hr but we can still sail there so it's all good.
I went out for another sail today at Victoria point (Thompson's beach). Wind was ok had a good time managed to get a couple of water starts. Had a couple of runs where I got into the foot straps but need to work on getting into them. Really happy with the board and the 7m sail seems to be a good match. Need to work on my gybe so that I don't spend half my time and energy getting going again after I fall off trying to turn. Thanks to the guys there today for the tips. Will definitely head back as nice spot for a sail.
Been out sailing a few times in the last couple of weeks. Have sailed a few places, Victoria point, Wellington point. The wind has been very light. Been good experience have been practising my gybes and water starts. Went out this afternoon hoping to get in a good sail with a bit more wind. Decided to go down the gold coast turned out to be a good choice. When I was rigging the sail i started to pull the downhaul down and at about half way the mast snapped just above the joint. I only bought this new at the end of Jan and had used maybe 7 or 8 times. Rang the shop I bought it from and took the mast back. Fortunately the shop was down the coast. Got a replacment and still managed to get in a sail. Once again the wind wasn't really there but did manage yo dsil for over an hour and not fall off. I also manage to do a few gybes. Just need some good wind so that I can practice getting on the plan and in the foot straps. Heading out agwin tomorrow about lunch time not sure where will be the best spot to go will see what the wind is like.
Just make sure that the mast is butted together properly , that sort of break is usually caused by mast not being butted together
Hi yeah it was together properly but broke just above the joint. I will definitely be checking it extra carefully in the future just to be sure. Thanks
Went out for another sail today at Victoria point was having an ok sail today managed a couple of water starts had a few falls trying to get in the foot straps and planing.
Had a few good runs but I was struggling in the chop to keep control and get into the straps.
My bad few days continued though when I fell onto the sail and went straight through one panel which has put my one and only sail out of commission for good I fear.
I will have to start looking for a new sail so I can get back out on the water ASAP.
not bad 1 mast and 1 sail in 2 days. Was worth it though had some great runs in the straps on the plane and even managed to complete a gybe without falling off.
Hang in there, there will be good days and not so good days, it was really trying at Vic point today, the wind was all over the place.
So my last outting wasn't so great with damaged sail. I have since paid a visit to Simon at board crazy and picked up a new 7.0m naish cruz.
Took it for a sail Thursday afternoon at manly Tide was low and the wind was marginal but had a good sail managed to get planning in the straps a few times great feeling. Makes all the difference when you get in the straps way more control. I found the new sail seemed to be a lot smoother. I didn't feel like I was going to go over the front even once. That may have just been the marginal wind but it seemed to perform better than my old Gaastra matrix.
Much better outting this week hopfully continues that way. Looking forward to some better weather.

Newer gear is so much more user friendly than 90's etc!
