Looking for a light wind replacement of my beat up (bit still alive) kode wave, I got to try the 2016 Angulo Triumph in the 89L version.
Before I update my test page here: windsurfing.lepicture.com/board-tests/ I wanted to share some quick thoughts.
Construction seems nice, double hole inserts front and back, reasonable weight for its size. When carrying, volume seems distributed well forward. Once in the water, the wide rear provides tons of buoyancy whether over white water, transitions etc.
Board planes well and eager to go. The plane is rather comfy, the wide tail slaps just a touch. The fin is way too big even for a light wind. It's wide at the base, I'd call it a side-on fin, lots of torque down low and power to crank.
Mast foot for my 4.7 was set all the way back.
The tail is very comfortable landing first, that is nice for a heavy board. I'm a fan of swallow tails.
It is very directional, almost too much, it feels slow to pivot even during non planing transitions. For backloops it's very nice and safe feeling as it'll control any odd pop.
The pointy nose, quite high, clears any danger both jibing and cutting through chop. Balance is well done, never does it sink front or back.
My main issue was the required heavy back foot steering. I tried to front foot bottom turn and while I'd get tons of rail grip, the arc would feel too long and hard to adjust. The top turn had to be very committed to turn sharply making moves like takas a bit tricky in my opinion.
Straps inserts are set quite narrow for a wave board while it calls for a more powerful rider, ie taller or heavier. I set them one off the front and all the way to the back at the rear and I'm only 70kg/155lbs and 5'8".
Riding back on my Kode, I immediately felt way more pivot while having similar planing abilities. The Kode did feel stiffer.
Pros: Long arc stable turns for larger waves, planing, high jumps, construction, volume distribution.
Cons: Sharp turns, pivot, pop.
It was nice to try a board that is different! It could be used as a freewave as well.
I did try another fin I've been using and like very much regardless of board size. The overall shape is just is bit stiff for me. Same fin back on Kode wave and weeeee much more fun! (Yet a couple of lbs heavier from water damage.)
Previous Angulo owner now has a Goya custom 3 which surprised him how easily it turned. I could also visually see the improvement in his turns.
