Hi

Getting back into windsurfing after a long time. Got a rig from 2005-2006 with a NCX 8.0 on a 50% blue 490SDM mast, all in seemingly ok shape, and not a lot of hours use in total.

1) How will this compare to a -new- NCX with an ARC or APEX SDM? Real world differences?
2) If prioritising, which should I renew first for best upgrade, mast or sail?
3) Other brands masts considered equal or better used with Severne?

(I am aware that 2021 NCX 8.0 is 460, but the focus is 15yr old mast/sail vs new...)

Thanks!

Severne significantly changed the mast curve around 2012 from rather hard top to constant curve. Your old NCX won't work well with a new mast, and your old mast won't work well on a new sail.

Just use the old mast and old sail together and have fun, especially since they seem to be in good conditions still!
Be aware that in 15 years, your sail might have become a bit brittle. Take care and don't sail out too far the first couple of times.

That?s good info! Severne website says they ?had the same mast curve for a long time?, without specifying. You just saved my day!

Just got this after a conversation with SEVERNE...

From me:
"Hi Dieter
Thanks for getting back so soon. Just to clarify, can I also use my old 2006 mast with a 2021 sail? "

REPLY:
"Hello Torjus,
Bend curve wise this will be the same so you can use your older 2006 mast on our current sails, however if you are planning on buying a sails with Cambers we would advice you to our latest Apex shape mast which have improved cam rotation drastically.
All the best,
Dieter"

I don't know...

Hmm, I got this information about mast curve change mostly from the unifiber mast selector page, as well as other forum sources.
I guess the Severne guys should know better and that information source is then certainly more trustable.
What I definitely can confirm is that for their camber sails, especially the 3-cam sails like Overdrives, you need the Apex masts which are thinner than previous models. Otherwise cambers simply don't rotate. But that's not applicable for your NCX.

Still, if your old sail and mast are in good shape, why buy new?

@mariachi76
Well, it?s rather to be prepared if something should break, whether the other item is compatible with todays equipment. As well as, of course, expanding my quiver of 1...

Went on the water today, and saw while rigging that the old mast was ever so slightly bent. Probably spent too much time in the luff, back in the day.

Yours re the camber sails is noted!
