Apparently a very large great white has been seen two days in a row, in the passage next to the reef break at South Passage. I have been told it has been reported to water police but can't find any postings on shark alert. Both days it has chased windsurfers out of the water. My mate spoke to them as they came in, they were very shaken. They saw whole torso of the shark Be safe out there, don't go out underpowered and try to keep upwind
Sightings were on Sunday and Monday, both days windsurfing were chased out of water after seeing whole fish come up in front of them. Local sailors have confirmed sightings over past week, usually in channel, where Cray boats come through. Surprised that no one has mentioned it, before wedge attack fisherman knew about the shark for previous week.
That's an interesting message Bermand. I was out there for the late sess from 5:00 to 7:40 on Monday, but didn't see hide nor hair of him. Only the usual sea birds flying back to the island at dusk. Mind you it was very choppy and glary for much of the time, and even identifying the promising swells difficult enough, so I might well have sailed straight over him without knowing...
Anyone else see anything?
Cheers, Jens
Hi. I've sailed Passage everyday from Saturday including late sunset Monday and very early Sunday. Sailed yesterday also. 1.30 -4. Few crew still out till late.
Very glad to hear nothing happened to those guys and that they reported it.
Also had I known maybe I'd thought twice about going out.
I sail there a LOT and although personaly can't confirm anything trusted friend of mine repeatedly saw a fin last Wednesday but didn't report.
Local fisherman apparently saw one around hole in the wall few weeks back.
50% sure spotted something on Saturday.
Gut feeling was something hanging around.
Shame to hear this. Bugger!
But they're always around over years just not this time of year. Shame.
On plus side it's been going off.
I sailed there 2:30 - 4:30 on sunday, only saw a happy dolphin - well, pretty sure it was a dolphin the way it did its dolphin-y thing out of the water, and I assume it was happy...
Danco-you may need to change your tacking routines then! Those outside tacks onto the swell might be too tempting for Brutus. Better to gybe quickly and get out of there...
Cheers, Jens
...... it was a dolphin the way it did its dolphin-y thing out of the water, and I assume it was happy...
or being chased.........
Sailed there today. All limbs intact. 99% gybe rate
There were Euro kiter girls that looked far tastier than my old sinewey carcass
Me too and I can confirm that all the interesting stuff was above the water
Didn't see any big sharks, didn't see any big waves either....
On the other hand, I did see a cute 1m bitey, Minimus, at scarbs today. Looked half stoned the way he/she swam. Must have been suffering post Xmas shopping shock.
