I'm an intermediate wing foiler (104kg) riding an 8 foot 25 inch wide Sunover downwind board. I'm currently using an AXIS png 1310 and I'm trying to decide on my next AXIS front foil for slightly higher wind. I'm also learning to SUP foil and I would consider purchasing a gen 2 foil drive to progress my wave riding learning. What AXIS (or other brand such as code) should I consider? Thanks heaps for your advice
People seem to love the Art V2 line. The 999 v2 may be a good foil to go to if you're already on Axis.
Are you looking for a singular do it all foil or are you looking to have multiple foils and multiple brands?
Similar wt and actually have the Casey sunova 7'6" 25"w a bit on the heavier side IMO compared to my latest light wind SB Ace 7'10"x23 DW definitely a bit lighter and faster through the water less drag which I ride more often usually with 1180 Spit Fire just a great big guy wing for winging and decent for sm wave supfoiling but when waves are thigh head high I change out to SF 960 supfoiling and winging n heavier winds, never been a big fan of the HA Arts in my wt class so far maybe the V2 Art might have a big guy model coming our way?I'd steer clear of the V2 Art 999 @ over 100kgs unless your in a windy locale
I would highly recommend the 1050 HPS as your next foil.
much quicker than a 1310
good glide
You are only looking at slightly more wind and you are not a light weight
will get up earlier than the 999ARTv2
will turn much better than the 1310
Since you are on a 1310, if you want to stay on the red fuse, then 1010 and 910 are both good options that will give you a lot more carve in the surf. Being older wings they should be easy to find second hand.
Buying a black fuse gives you a ton of options. At your weight the HPS 1050 and 980 are still great and easy to find second hand. HPS is basically superseded by the SF and ART lines now, but they are still excellent wings in the surf with great manners. Probably avoid V1 ARTs as the newer SF, ART Pro and V2s are better in every way.
In the current generation wings, you've got the ART Pro 1201 for speed and glide, and the bigger Spitfires for bottom end and carve.
Seeing as you mentioned Code I'll try to come from that angle (and it is a very worthy consideration if you aren't heavily invested in the Axis system) I'm also only 70kg so I'm taking an educated guess at what works for your weight.
Firstly forget about needing a foil drive to learn sup surf foiling. With the current boards/foils/paddles you can pretty much paddle onto anything you want and the FD would just add weight/drag to that situation. Especially considering you're familiar with being on foil already. Put that money towards your quiver of foils/boards for each discipline.
Having said that at your size I think I'd just start out with the 1300s and work your way down in sizes from there. Even at my weight I've been finding use for the 1300s in either small sup surf waves (although I had it out the other day accidentally in 2-3ft and it handles it really well!) or very light wind winging.
It'd pair well with an 80cm mast, medium fuse and something like the 158AR tail.
For higher wind winging I'd probably be looking at dropping the size of your board down first TBH. I ride the code 720s in decent winds and it's a lot of fun, my safe go to foil is the 980s.
The 1310 is not a good winging foil. At your weight, the Axis 1050 HPS will be the logical upgrade. It's a fantastic all purpose foil, fast and stable, decent glide. It doesn't over foil in the waves. Locks in nicely. Don't bother with the ART and the Spitfire foils until you master the 1050. ART is a lot more slippy and higher stall speed. Spitfire is too wide for the volume you need. Plus Spitfire is more for the waves. My advice is to sell the 1310 and get a 1300 for low wind winging. Then the 1050 for medium to high winds. Also if you're 104kg, you will need about 1500 sq cm to get up easily. The 1050 fits that bill.
Jakedawg is onto it.
Axis 1050 HPS, you are not ready and too heavy for the ART's etc.
If you went Code, 1300S
Either one would be a huge improvement on the 1310.

Would you feel confident jumping a 980S? I normally don't like jumping foils with more span than 900mm, that's where the 850S excels... but I'm wondering if the 980S would be doable, without too much risk. I wish they had made that one high-mod like the 1130S.
