Hi All,My complete foil ripped out of my board yesterday (13/10/24), Port Beach right in front of the carpark.Im offering a $500 reward if someone finds or recovers it.
Very concerning that the foil box would fail from typical use without hitting anything. It was a very light 10 knot sesson with a 85 HM Carbon Mast, 12 Swift front wing
Cheers, Ben
Hi Ben,
Always best to go straight back to your local dealer with issues such as these. Naish have a very good reputation for looking after our customers and resolving warranty claims.
If you'd like to send an email to info@windgenuity.com.au with some details, pictures including the serial number and a copy of the sales receipt we'd be happy to look into this matter.
Cheers,
Matt
Thanks Matt. I actually just got a response from my local distributor who I bought everything from. So hopefully I get a good result. Its never fun to lose $5k worth of gear for something you had no control over!
So sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, early on in foiling a few manufacturers used those tracks with brittle hard plastic and they do just that. I really hope Naish sorts you out.
if you need a repair let me know as I use the 16" Chinook ones that are stronger and more adjustment of course

Thanks Mark, Sounds like Naish are going to replace both the board and some credit for the foil. If I can keep the old board I just might get a new track installed.
Shadow, as someone who has also had a foil box failure, I'd strongly suggest a tether from the foil mast to the board (I use a thin bit of spectra) for any old boards that might have suss boxes. I got my old board professionally repaired and it's now solid. Really hope the foil crops up. Mine took 2 days to surface on a downwind beach.
After seeing a very similar failure locally and observing how these boards are constructed, I have come to the conclusion that this is the inevitable fate of all Naish wingfoil boards.
Luckily it is an easy repair and by adding proper reenforcement around the foil tracks along with higher quality tracks the rest of the board can be around a long time.

Not 'all' Naish wingfoil boards. The problem seemed to be with quite a few of the 'Hover' boards built and sold through 2022. The reinforcement was fine, and the tracks are ok, but from experience, the lay-up in the channels that the tracks sit in, was often patchy and not gripping the tracks fully. I've had three since that time, no problems.
Thanks for the heads up. Is there any warning signs before failure like soft spots, small cracks or movement at mast base?

I must have a good one then. Still going strong from new.

Failed board I saw was a 2023 hover downwind. Essentially no meaningful reinforcement and poor quality tracks.
It's brittle track material and I saw a few of them. Same on Konrad
no better than cheap Chinese longboard fin boxes, so even with good glassing the nuts can tear thru. . for a long term Windsports company I think it's shocking.
however top stuff that local agent and distributors both offered to make it right.
AUS126
all I've seen were like the pic - sudden catastrophe
but surely starts with a little crack so if I had one I would look in tracks well after every sesh
Very lucky you didn't have a foil drive on as well would have been $8500 more. My
mate puts a half hitch bit of rope from his mast back to he's leg rope plug. As this
is not the first time I have heard this happening and also different brands.
This is what I found , as I prepared to fix the board (November 2021) . Adequate high density foam block, but glass cloth (laid in channels for track) was not fully wetted out, large areas of dry cloth, which had no chance of holding even the best of tracks , second photo shows routed out area for new high density block, you can see some of the original hd block.
I had the same thing happen on my hover board 2 years ago. Got replaced cost free by the dealer , said it was a known problem. Didn't bring my foil
back tho!

Surely you sold the new board straight away after that?

That's some quality construction there...NOT
I had a near identical failure and loss of a full foil set about 2 yrs ago, same brand and model. The warranty and backup service from the shop was unquestionable. I sold the new replacement board immediately. Hard to regain confidence in the build quality. Hopefully this has been resolved by now.
Unfortunately I have lost the receipt for my Naish Hover and despite shopping at the same store for 20 years I have no proof of purchase. Im really hoping on the goodwill of Naish to do the right thing. I dont think I'll be back for more Naish products in hurry otherwise.
Hard lesson mate.Glad they are honouring the replacement or refund.I personally wouldn't want a replacement of the same board. What about the replacement of cost of your foil kit?

Hi Ben,
Do you remember what Model Year the board was? I've recently bought a 2019 MY prone version, after seeing your experience, it looks like I will invest in some tether between foil and board... :D
Also - i think you can recover the foil rig if you find the expertise of a qualified scuba diver!
Thanks
Sam

It was Naish Y26. This is season Y28 so I think it was a 2022 board.
Hi All, just to close this thread:Foil is still missing, however thanks to Daniel and Reg at Windsurfing Perth, they arranged with Naish to provide me with a brand new board and foil set- like for like.
A great outcome and testament to to the value of purchasing from your local family run store. It has certainly restored my faith in the integrity of Naish products.
