Hi Everyone,
Still relatively new to this foiling caper but I have some questions. I'm starting to wing foil with a 125L wing/SUP board and 4.5m wing. Only had the 4.5m out in 15-20knts, enough to taxi but not get up on the foil hence I have a 6m that arriving any day. I also tried SUP foiling in small surf and found it it too tippy. I'll practice some more on flat water up the creek. I recon I could probably prone surf it if I try. I surf 9'1" mal and 6'10 50L approx shortboard for 30 years and surf almost daily and would put myself in intermediate-advanced. Windsurfed in the 80's.

I'm after suggestions should I choose to buy a board specifically for prone surf foiling, what sort of litres should I be looking at? Could I get away with a cheap second hand older style or clearance low litres board?

Cheers
OJ

How tall are you and what do you weight?

I,m a very mediocre surfer due the lack of decent conditions, pretty good wavesailor and supper.

With my 188x97kg I tried to pronefoil my KT wingdrifer 5.4x22x56l and that was F##king scary but worked surprisingly well.Still I prefer to supfoil because of some back issues that make the pop up really hard. The 5.4 wingdrifter is a last year model so I suppose everywhere on sale.

I'm 178cm and 96kg. I've shed 10kg since November. Aiming for 90.

It going to depend on whether or not you expect to be able to duck-dive. For example, I'm 84kg, and I'm looking to get a midlength prone board. I could go between 45-55L... 55L is about as much as I can duck-dive.

I can duck dive the 9'1" mal if I need to but I'm guessing its less volume that the 125L board. Maybe 90-100L. Probably need to find some locals who might let me try, but I've only seen one guy out here, and its only been a few times.

A lot depends on conditions, if you have a nice soft whitewater chip in, you don't need much volume or length. If you need to paddle a lot or catch unbroken/long period swell, a higher volume mid-length can help a lot. I'm 95 kg and I prone my 6'0"x19.5" 80L wing board a fair amount. I can't duckdive it but it will get into unbroken waves and makes long paddles a lot less painful. Short/wide wingboards are doable but not great. Try to stay 21" wide or less if possible and probably no less than 50L at your weight.

Based on some volume info for long boards I'm estimating my Mal is 50 - 60L. So I should be alright with something around there about or slightly less from a short board surfing perspective. Its the control when up on the foil that's going to be the challenge.
