4 cylinders, 8 speeds and about a kilometre of tubing, valves Ts , baffles and sensors under the bonnet to get the thing to to pass the drive cycle test. Surely 8 speed gearboxes are a sign that we've hit the law of diminishing returns with internal combustion?
The Tesla model S with a 1 speed gearbox, ( If you'd even call it a gearbox) goes 0 to 100 in 2.2 seconds in ludicrous mode.
Nice one, Ian, but I suspect the Tesla car is about US$145k whereas the Alfa is more accessible at around AUD$65K (est.) for the base model with Q4...which I have quoted. I guess it is a great car and there is I assume no denying given the impressions of the girls in the video, but it is not a fair comparison at the pricepoint.

Really !!! Sell the engine in any sports car brought to Australia and you can throw in a cheap large 4 or 6 cylinder that fits the bay, and it will pay for the fitting modification and also probably a kit light aircraft that IS ALLOWED to go 250 Kmh (STOL generally is around 180 - 190 Kmh top speed).

Electric is the future no doubt. Just need cars with better range and more recharging stations. Plus the environmental cost of lithium is still unresolved.

It's not just about breaks, it's how long it takes to recharge too. You need to plan around recharging - even with the super charging stations because they take quite a while.

Electric Motors have been up to the task for ages. It is battery technology that has been lagging in electric cars getting a foothold. In recent time, there have been some developments in micro-controllers about 20 years ago to enable brushless and sensorless DC motors to be economically run, and that has been a game changer in terms of low cost efficient and compact electric motors.

So, in Australia whether you sell the transmission and engine when you get a sports car to make a "Trans Aus", you can as much keep the engine and transmission and fuel systems (if you're stinking) in a shed and put it back in when you look for a new car.
(I hear most people on average change their car once every four years in Australia).
