There is fat and then there is gross. I really can't understand how people can let themselves become grossly obese.

Some I see amaze me that they can still walk around.

I have a friend who goes to the gym at least three times a week with a personal trainer session every Saturday morning. She is fit and strong, but she's not a small girl.
it took her ages to stop hating herself and trying to measure herself against what she thought others thought of her.
Then I've other friends whose only physical activity is looking for the tv remote control and stuffing their faces full of garbage masquerading as food. I've known these guys for over a decade and now their kids are involved and the poor buggas know no better, their 14yr old son has bigger tits than my girlfriend.

Poor form to bully or ridicule someone for something they can not change but being fat isn't one of them. That **** of a fat friend who can't loose weight is bs,. weight is a simple equation, caleries in to out,. Simples.

Having worked in the heath care professional for the past 14 years I find it personally offensive that someone choice directly effects me., My back if ****ed from lifting 130kg too regularly.
Oh and don't even get me started on the cost to the health care system. It's way worse than smoking.

So my short answer is all fast food places should have mirrored doors to deter those weak willed phucks!

This puts a whole new perspective on women who don't fit the norm of perfect swimwear models.

There are more racy photos of her and other plus size models in this years edition.

I knew the cost is high but avoided making comparisons to smoking, alcohol etc as I don't know the stats.

It goes way beyond the fast food outlets though. When you see a family of five really fat people at a Woolworths check out with two trolleys overfull with loaves of white bread, Coca Cola and packets of potato chips you see that it is a problem of education and discipline.

Really... I've gone from ridiculously fit professional soldier in my 20's to early 40's, to an arthritic obese individual of over 150kgs now in mid 50's. Movement is pain, sailing is almost a memory.
Nice gentleman I passed coming out of a cinema turned around a gave me a card for his weight loss and cardio exercise business, I backed him into a wall and had a short discussion with him about judging people without knowing them and /or their medical history.
You should learn from that little message, I have no time for the arseholes who do not.
He however didn't and proceeded to tell me he could make my life easier, (something numerous specialists, physiotherapists, and various medical professionals could not), through exercise and natural "medicines".
The Hoyts cinema staff called the police, the police officer was understanding of my frustration.

Is it really that easy just to say they are weak willed phucks?

Is your strong will something that you have earnt or just a blessing of good fortune?

No wonder you were so angry, that conversation must have kept you away from your popcorn and 10 choc tops!

As I said,. Caleries in to out. Just don't put so much food in your mouth if your no as mobile as you once were.

possibly one of the most insensitive d*ck posts I've ever read on this forum.

what's your response to people that have thyroid issues? 1000kJ a day and starve?

applying your perspective to everyone in this space shows profound immaturity and a lack of empathy. hopefully you sit back, think, and learn from the post above - but I doubt it.

Agree with this, some people have a higher metabolism than others, makes it much easier to maintain a healthier weight than others who have a slower metabolism.

As as to the question, out and out shaming ain't cool, but there's nothing wrong with some suttle encouragement to better their situation, depending on their attitude towards the situation as well.

I have been surprised to see over the years the number of children who would now be deemed to be over-weight. Whilst a rarity in my days at school, it is now becoming more than often a regular occurrence to see children carry more weight than they should. There is a strong correlation between a sedentary lifestyle, fast food consumption and excessive weight and we have technology to thank for that. It is not uncommon to hear stories of children spending hour after hour glued to the computer. Apparently games have time counters on them and I have been told by many kids that they would easily spend 150+ hours "completing/competing" in games.

For parents it is an easy and now "safe" option to have the kids locked away in the gaming room for hour on hour whilst they socialise with friends. They know where their kids are and don't have to worry about them. That said some of the biggest dangers out there are not on the street but by the unlimited access they have to inappropriate sites online. It is always a challenge as a parent when visiting homes of parents that allow this uncontrolled access to gaming and sites (many far to violent or graphic) when they have no-idea exactly what they are up to. Slack and irresponsible parenting!!! It makes me selective of friends I now choose to hang-out with based on how they entertain their own kids.

What is now occurring in society is the normalization and promotion of plus sized bodies through the various marketing channels. It is acceptable and at times promoted as a positive to be larger than should be deemed healthy.

Have a look at where the fast food giants position themselves so as maximise their target audiences. I can tell you now, it is not in the leafy green suburbs, but areas of low to mid socio-economic areas that would without a doubt have a higher level of obesity and health issues.

I sympathize with people who have genuine health reasons for weight gain, however for many this is not the reason.

The subtle nudge I'd like to see is a shift to risk rating for health insurance premiums, even basic Medicare levy. If it is fair to charge young male drivers more for their car insurance, it is equally fair to charge middle aged fatties for their health insurance

Yeah; out-and-out shaming is just plain rude. Use the carrot not the stick. Especially with fat people.

(...couldn't help it)

But seriously it is possible to transform almost any body. I've seen some amazing transformations where after a few months the person is barely recognisable.

I reckon it's about easy, *fun*, achievable goals. Get fit slowly. Go at 60% effort. Even less. It's about getting a momentum going. Don't set out to run 100km/week the first week or anything. Or go to the gym every day. That's silly.

Perversely the fitter you are the easier it is to get fitter and stay fit. It's not unlike how the rich get richer; it's easier if you have more money. Ditto getting fit. You just have to actually start with reasonable, achievable even easy goals. That'll motivate you to do more. The momentum will build. Don't choke the momentum.

Most importantly pick an activity that you'll enjoy. Running on a treadmill is not enjoyable for anyone. Studies have shown that rats in a cage will opt for a heroin addiction over a treadmill. Who can blame them? Activities that involve a game or a sport or some sort of progression or fun are much easier to stick with and get fit with. You want to almost get fit accidentally from your new hobby/sport/activity.

As for metabolism: diet and exercise changes metabolism. That's a big part of it. It is not "woo" or anything. It's hard fact.

Do it. Slowly at first. Have fun.

OK, what about parents?

I really have to hold my tongue when I see a 14 year old kid who weighs more than me, and their parents are feeding them KFC, coca-cola, and an ice-cream.

I really don't know what to say. Expressing my anger and frustration, and disgust, with them won't help.

What do you say? I really want to say something next time.

Serious question.

When I was younger I was a tall skinny bastard and in school sometimes people picked on me for being skinny, nothing I couldn't handle and my feelings weren't really hurt but now I'm 6'5" (198 cm) and 102 kg and despite numerous health problems I am very fit looking so I say screw all the fat bastards, in school they were the ones with muscles but now they're just fat. HAHA look at you now, genetics caught up to you.
And then there is socialized medicine, when you are fat and out of shape it costs the taxpayers and it becomes the business of the taxpayers. Shame away, snowflakes can whine and cry all butt hurt for all I care, grow a set.

I know a mother of three young kids, they live with their dad.

She takes them to school and picks them up.

She tells me in the car all they ask for is McDonald's - they're addicted.

Her boyfriend tells me the same. When they visit they more or less beg to be taken to Maccas.

Junkfood is all they will eat.

The parents need to be much, much stronger. Get them to watch Supersize me.
