Have yous spent much time in California?
No friggin' way.
I heard it is a cess-pit of woke ideology and you had to have a superior IQ to even get in.
I'd be worried if I went there and drank the water I'd turn into a ladyman or sommfink.
How am I supposed to know that, I've never been to California
Apologise to philin and his family.
sorry philin

I am no economist, so can someone explain to me how putting tariffs on everything will push prices and cost of living down? I am guessing there must be some devil in the detail here, but It would seem that if you put a tax on something, the price would go up.
Similarly, if you are going to deport millions of your low paid workers, will there be enough citizens left who want to take a paycut to do
those now vacant jobs? I guess the minds behind these policies have figured this stuff out, so I would be keen to read how it's going to work.

I found California to be everything you think it is and then some, even in jest. It's simultaneously the best and the worst humanity can do, truly a place of dreams and nightmares. The supersized economy and cultural hotbed that is California isn't for the faint hearted, conservatives tend to sh!T their collective panties upon arrival. For one I did well there and made the most out of my time. BUT it is without doubt fraught with dangers that will spit you out given half a chance. Spent enough time there to know when it was time for this Antipodean to move on.

FormulaNova studdied ecconomics at University. He's considered as somewhat of an expert in STB circles. I often, and unknowingly, find myself stroking my whispy beard in utter admiration of his high passion and intelect, while reading his informed, but sometimes angry, economic analysis of world wide economic policies.
Or maybe airsail could weigh in, I think he's some sort of two-bit financial adviser, who might know something.

Yeah, so,.... it really looks like you are getting stuck into that Aldi wine now.
Does it just come in goon bags or can you get it in bottles ?

It's $6 bottles, that have won many awards. I buy them mainly for the corks. I shape them into floats that I use to catch black drummer off the rocks.
Brent in Qld, are there black fish in California?
Prop 47 reclassified theft offenses from felonies to misdemeanors, including shoplifting.
that's an easy way to reduce crime
Prop 47 is a decade old and has expired.
Prop 36 however, has the first two thefts under $950 would remaining as a misdemeanor - which is similar to Proposition 47 - but a person's third theft conviction, regardless if under $950 was stolen, would qualify as a felony and make a person eligible for prison time.
How am I supposed to know that, I've never been to California
How did you find out about Prop 47?
.
In Western societies this generation is the first in many that looks like its standard of living will not be as good as the one before it. This is happening at the same time Western societies move more and more to the left.
That's not true. Tax rates have moved to the right, by favouring high earners. Differentials between the affluent and the average wage earner have increased dramatically - CEOs income compared to the average has increased by ten times since the post-war economic boom.
I notice that you make statements but run shy of providing evidence or any mention of objective measures - almost certainly because they will prove you wrong.
If you are such an expert why didn't you understand and recognise how far to the left the Republican Party platform of 1956 is compared to that of today? One doesn't expect you to pick up the exact facts, but the fact that you obviously had no idea of the way things used to be shows that you have no real knowledge of how they have changed.
Can't believe I didn't pick up on the 1956 Republican policy platform, you walked me straight into that trap, touche
The point was not to trap anyone per se - but to show how that your claims about others and history were untrue, to show how far the pendulum has swung to the right, and to show that Philn was perfectly consistent in being "Progressive" (which in US terms arguably means returning to 1950s Republican values) and in voting Democrat.
The period after WW2 when even "conservatives" often had values that seem left wing today saw huge advances in health, wealth and society in the western world. It's perfectly reasonable for Philn to want to return to that.
In many ways today's "conservatives" seem to be modelling their ideals on the period before WW1, and certainly before the Great Depression and WW2. That's arguably more regressive than it is conservative.
I call BS, no way would 1950's republicans support modern democrat values like
Transgender ideology like letting men pretend they are women, or assisting kids to mutilate their bodies
or
Open borders allowing millions of illegal immigrants into the country
or
not prosecuting thieves and criminals if they didn't steal over $950
or
abortion on demand
or
DEI actions
as a few examples
Can you provide an example of Democratic party policies to assist kids mutilating there bodies?
Because that's not happening.
Who's BS narrative are you swallowing?
The USA has open borders? Really?
Are you saying that there are no modern day Republican values that you find distasteful? You'd be on board with all the policies and promises Trump has committed to?
www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-transyouth-data/
Democrats will vigorously oppose state and federal bans on gender-affirming health care and respect the role of parents, families, and doctors - Democrat Party Platform 2024
Giving a kid puberty blockers, that makes them sterile, is happening, surgical intervention is happening as well. That is literally assisting kids to mutilate their bodies.
As for open border I guess the 5 to 10 Million illegal immigrants in recent years got in through sealed borders.
How do just ignore facts that no one disputes
Best practice Gender affirming care does not support or recommend surgery on children, but looking at the numbers that get it anyway? About the same as under the Trump administration..... (less than 300 a year) but yeah it definitely all the lefts fault.
Puberty blockers are not just handed out to whoever wants them, and they're not supposed to be used long-term, even then the risk of sterility is low.
Waaaaaaayyyy lower than the risks of NOT providing appropriate treatment to kids suffering Gender dysphoria. (You do know what those risks are, right?)
Aaaaahhh so, The democrats are responsible for all th border issues? I thought Trump built a wall to seal the southern border?
I thought that immigration was one of his big ticket items? So why did he actively sabotage bi-partisan policy to improve border security?
I said 1950s republicans wouldn't support those polices, you said "that's not happening" so I provided evidence it is happening then I provided an example of Democratic policy supporting it.... at your request. Your post above confirms its happening.
earlier you were denying it, now your justifying it.
So the narrative I am swallowing is not BS is it, its real.
You did not provide an example of Democratic party party policy assisting kids to mutilate their bodies.
You provided a link to an article saying that surgery for minors with gender dysphoria diagnoses is extremely rare, and that it also occurred under the Trump administration.
The democratic party support gender affirming care.
Current guidelines and best practice for Gender affirming care does not support gender reassignment surgery for children (what you claim is mutilating them).
Do kids with gender dysphoria get surgical procedures done? Yes
Is it Democratic Party Policy to support such surgeries in children? No

Lots of people predicted it for sure. The legacy media certainly didn't.
Yes, I was watching polymarket go from 52% to 60% for Trump in the last month of the campaign. The polls and the media have been notoriously wrong.
I think these new crypto prediction markets - despite their bias of predominantly crypto users, and market manipulation - are more accurate, because people put their own money into it.
If there was one thing about Trump policy that I'm happy about, it is that crypto will be allowed to flourish. They are already talking about building a national bitcoin reserve.
More appealing, is that CBDC is now dead in America and more than likely will be dead in Australia.
I follow a few crypto pundits. Max Keiser, Stacy Herbert and Efrat Fenigson. And of course Nayib Bukele who has raised his country from the dead! IMO it's a better option than precious metals. Unfortunately both are at the mercy of the central banks which is where I believe the quest for liberty should be focusing their energy. The Yanks are now nearly $36 trillion in debt. Most of which has been squandered on BS agendas that enrich the few. To the detriment of the working citizen.
If I were pushed to adopt a political label I would class myself as a conservative libertarian socialist. Socialist because we are social primates and cannot thrive unless we all do. By the same token there is no way I can support the "woke" agenda because it is so far detached from reality. In actual fact I believe that a heck of a lot of it is devised to break down the bonds that keep our communities strong.
Do you really think Trump is supporting the working citizens of the USA and not pushing policies that will help enrich the few?
What's his stance on Minimum Wage?
What's his stance on universal healthcare?
What's his stance on unions?
What's his stance tax breaks for rich people?
What's his stance on childcare for working families?
In the unlikely event Trump removes the tax from tips, the punters will just tip less. American conservatives like to see people beg for tips rather than pay them a fair wage.
I shape them into floats that I use to catch black drummer off the rocks.
Not sure which black drummer you are trying to catch.
I am guessing either Bill Ward, original drummer for Black Sabbath or Clyde Stubblefield, drummer for James Brown ?

He says he is (if that was directed at me). The proof will be in the pudding won't it. I listened to him talking to Rogan for three hours. He sounds genuine. From recollection he is big on tariffs which will make it more attractive for manufacturing within the country. Will it work? I have experience importing machinery into Australia as an engineering buyer in the late 80's. My opinion then is opposite to what it is now. Import duties were astronomical. We only imported from overseas after serious consideration. However we developed some quite impressive packaging machinery using Australian engineering firms. I'd be willing to bet that those firms are now either closed or have moved their business over to Asia. To Australia's detriment.
Globalisation. Centralisation. suits the suits to the detriment of the working class. Everywhere!
His other tactic is to lower the cost of energy. That is a no brainer. Benefits everyone.
From what I could deduce his goal is national prosperity. We will have to see won't we.
I've made it clear on here a number of times. I am not a supporter of capitalism. It is out of harmony with both the environment and our sociology. Unfortunately we are stuck with it at the moment. And Trump.
From my perspective he is by far the better option than the Democrats for one reason and one reason only. He is less likely to trigger nuclear annihilation! The downside is he has his tongue up the Zionist backside.

I didn't pick him as a rimmer. I thought he was a rimmee.

Look, I can't argue about importing stuff rather manufacturing it locally.
But when you're arguing against rich elites who preference their own over working people?
One set of candidates included a lawyer who worked her way up, sided by a high school teacher who ran to become governor.
The other set included a rich heir and capitalist who has every job since his stint in the marines handed to him.
Just a random thought for the day: Why haven't the Oompa Loompa peoples (1970's generation) complained about the cultural appropriation being perpetrated by all the fake orange skin folk on TV?
Oompa loompas' are civilised noble people who do not concern themselves with petty games of the snowflake generation

Anyway I'm not wrong here's some evidence I googled about living standards in California
Cost of Living in California Compared to National Average
Housing (Buy and Rent)97% higher
Utilities (Monthly)24%higher
Food15% higher
Healthcare8% higher
Transportation30% higher
Goods & Services10% higher+
www.rentcafe.com/cost-of-living-calculator/us/ca/
Housing is expensive partly because lots of highly-paid people are attracted to the state because of its weather, the coast, and the fact that the median income is 20% higher than in the median state. It's not surprising that people would rather live there than in the mid-western states - have you ever lived through something like their winters, which can be -34 in winter and a humid +110 in summer?
I don't particularly like the USA, but California is not the hole you claim it is.
By the way, your state of Qld has the highest crime in Australia; lower than the average median income; the second-most expensive capital city house prices; the most expensive capital city fuel, but fairly cheap national food prices; and the most expensive public transport. So by the indicia you chose, your own state is a "hellhole" by our standards.

Qld crime will drop now Labor has been shown the door.
Back to California, what is your honest opinion on the falling crime rate. Is it a real drop in crime or just a change in how it's reported.

I remember studying crime and deviance at uni. Car theft was a good measure of crime as definition hasn't changed significantly and it's often reported.
Just a random thought for the day: Why haven't the Oompa Loompa peoples (1970's generation) complained about the cultural appropriation being perpetrated by all the fake orange skin folk on TV?
In the orgiinal novel Oompa Loompas were black. But in the original film they were orange.
Think of it kinda like Wesley Snipes.

Those supposedly leaving California in droves for XYZ reasons are the people most likely to end up behind bars. Thus a reduction in crime, pretty simple.

Probably the most simplistic so far.
Sadly I have encountered a lot of stupid people. I guess the old adage, "Not all stupid people are conservatives... but all conservatives are stupid", applies.

Ahh, I am probably the first to agree with you about a lot of things, but are you sure you have that logic right?
I wonder what makes people think 'conservative'? Is it that when they start out they have very little money/assets, and when they get older and have more money and assets, they just want to keep it, so think differently?
