And Azzurro is doing 8.5-9.5kts downwind. Upright hull speed is a lot less so they must be surfing a fair bit.
If anyone's looking for some info on the boats outside the top 5, this is Nic Douglass' round of interviews with quite a variety of boats prior to the race.

That's interesting MB. So they still have a bit of sea state out there.
This is the current overlay from windyty.
The wave overlay is better but needs animation, and I cant work out how to animate it here.

A bit of current and a bit of surfing apparently. They are out of it now and back to mid 5kts.
ABC TV news tonight dared to differentiate between the big boats at the front and report that there was actually an overall winner that may have nothing to do with them at all and was down the back. Thank you Fiona Blackwood.
I know a lot of you here like the smaller older IOR style of yacht, so this may impress...
If Azzuros' speed was quick, have a look at the Jarkan 9.2, Gun Runner, if you look back through "standings" to line honours, then time stamp, you will see she was quicker than the super maxis....
In fact I think at 01:01:40 she was the 3rd fastest boat in the fleet....... also faster than the super maxis..

The SOG seems to be all over the place with boats alongside each other showing between 3 and 11 knots.
The wind across a large area in the middle of the fleet is reading 11 knots.
It makes me wonder if they are not periodic instantaneous readings, so a boat that is at the right moment catching a wave will look good; one that just ran off the back of one won't.

I think that's exactly what it is Tamble.
Yes its a ping every 10 minutes.
But Gun Runner had an interesting hour...
01:01:00= 8.9kn
01:01:10= 9.1
01:01:20= 9,2
01:01:30= 13.7
01:01:40= 12.9
01:01:50= 12.4
01:02:00= 7.6
Not sure if that hour would have been fillled with wild child like excitement, or panic in fear for your life, I'm guessing the first, cause they obviously push hard for that hour. At race time 01:09:00, they are leading div. 4 on IRC.....

Not ususally TwoDogs, but this year whoever won the battle of the 100's....yep! They deserve it in spades! That was the best tactical race in years.

Not disagreeing with that but Richards is still a tosser prefer seeing him not win.
Agree.
Blackjack somehow got under Commanche from the Iron Pots to the finish line to claim 2nd on line honors.
This race has everything for all of the handicap divisions, and with mates in Div 2, 3 and 4 I'm tearing my hair out trying to keep place on the Div winners. Its a lottery, and great to watch.
That's interesting BB, I thought they had to have AIS on as part of the rules, I need to check the SI's when I get home.
It's required equipment, does that mean it must be used?
Update on the AIS?
This is taken from the sailing instructions,
Update under 11.4 Changes to SR's.
Special Regulation 4.09 (a): An AIS Transponder shall be carried and be switched on, such that it is receiving and transmitting.
On a side note, good to see a Notice to Competitors extolling the use of personal AIS beacons, good on you CYCA.
I don't understand why they would not have it turned on. If it is a requirement is there a penalty ?Obviously not. WOX1 sister ship has hers on.
Goodboy SB I see yours is on . Hell I must have better things to do .
G'day BB,
There ya go, an interview with Peter Harburg the owner of Blackjack at the finish, and he mentioned exactly the same thing, ie: the RC need to penalise the boats that were not transmitting on AIS as it was a rule requirement.
Interestingly Mark Richards just said that he doesn't care what anyone says Wild Oats X1 has crossed the line first 10 times
Regards Don

It would be unfortunate if penalised a second time in a row but to believe your above the rules is an insult to all the other contestants.
Has the CYCA got the balls.
Must be a sudden wind direction change sweeping through the fleet. Clusters of yachts keep heading North; I assume as they get caught spinnaker up by the change.
Still light though

Exactly the reason I don't like him and dislike seeing WOXI do well
No AIS should be another time penalty for woxi. Its a pretty big advantage being able to see competitors position, speed and direction when the can't see yours.
Seems they like a hollow victory.
This is not quite correct.
I saw it was not operating from Wed 26th evening onward as I mentioned on SB.
'Harburg claimed that Oats had ceased to transmit an AIS signal from the boat last night, in contravention of the race sailing instructions. The rules clearly state that all boats must carry the system, which identifies the boat and her position to neighbouring craft, and it must be turned on at all times.'
So if no penalty next year all contestants can turn it off.
Perhaps penalties should be shown beside the rules ,as in golf. ( joke)
another mistake from WO

There is no doubt that Wild Oats X1 is a well funded fast boat with good crew but sometimes the seemingly arrogant comments by Mark Richards are a bit of a turn off to me

Someone should protest WO !!!
I read that the 100s had visuals on each other the whole race ,and therefor may not protest as WO had no advantage from the AIS turn off.
Thats crap !!!! what about a boat competing for the HC win with no visual on WO ? they were disadvantaged , as per the new rule !!
If no boat protests the race committee should !!! If they dont , may as well get rid of the rule !!!!!!!!!!!!

Met him once. Not a lot of time but enough to appreciate he is a tosser!
AIS is to be on at all times, what doesn't he get about clear English.
