And Azzurro is doing 8.5-9.5kts downwind. Upright hull speed is a lot less so they must be surfing a fair bit.
If anyone's looking for some info on the boats outside the top 5, this is Nic Douglass' round of interviews with quite a variety of boats prior to the race.

Mark Twain 7th on HC !!!! wind her up and let her go !!!! go old girl !!!!
ABC TV news tonight dared to differentiate between the big boats at the front and report that there was actually an overall winner that may have nothing to do with them at all and was down the back. Thank you Fiona Blackwood.
I know a lot of you here like the smaller older IOR style of yacht, so this may impress...
If Azzuros' speed was quick, have a look at the Jarkan 9.2, Gun Runner, if you look back through "standings" to line honours, then time stamp, you will see she was quicker than the super maxis....
In fact I think at 01:01:40 she was the 3rd fastest boat in the fleet....... also faster than the super maxis..
Yes its a ping every 10 minutes.
But Gun Runner had an interesting hour...
01:01:00= 8.9kn
01:01:10= 9.1
01:01:20= 9,2
01:01:30= 13.7
01:01:40= 12.9
01:01:50= 12.4
01:02:00= 7.6
Not sure if that hour would have been fillled with wild child like excitement, or panic in fear for your life, I'm guessing the first, cause they obviously push hard for that hour. At race time 01:09:00, they are leading div. 4 on IRC.....
NIc Douglass live at the finish.....go WOXI!

Agree.
Blackjack somehow got under Commanche from the Iron Pots to the finish line to claim 2nd on line honors.
This race has everything for all of the handicap divisions, and with mates in Div 2, 3 and 4 I'm tearing my hair out trying to keep place on the Div winners. Its a lottery, and great to watch.
Interestingly Mark Richards just said that he doesn't care what anyone says Wild Oats X1 has crossed the line first 10 times
Regards Don
Must be a sudden wind direction change sweeping through the fleet. Clusters of yachts keep heading North; I assume as they get caught spinnaker up by the change.
Still light though
No AIS should be another time penalty for woxi. Its a pretty big advantage being able to see competitors position, speed and direction when the can't see yours.
Seems they like a hollow victory.
This is not quite correct.
I saw it was not operating from Wed 26th evening onward as I mentioned on SB.
'Harburg claimed that Oats had ceased to transmit an AIS signal from the boat last night, in contravention of the race sailing instructions. The rules clearly state that all boats must carry the system, which identifies the boat and her position to neighbouring craft, and it must be turned on at all times.'
So if no penalty next year all contestants can turn it off.
Perhaps penalties should be shown beside the rules ,as in golf. ( joke)
