It's time to add a longboard to my collection but I'm not to sure what length, width, volume etc. I'm 6'3, 93kg have been surfing a FireWire 6'3 with 40litres of volume and also a 8'6 SUP with 120litres. I use to ride longboards occasionally when I was younger and miss that feeling that a shortboard and a SUP don't offer. Any help would be grateful and possible places to get a second hand board for a good price

Why hello sir.

Adapt long time no see, unfortunately I sold a perfect board that would have suited you last week.

6.3 in height I'd look for 9.6 in length. How much do you want to spend?

I am going to ask the question ...where do you want to fit it into your quiver and on what do you want ride it?
I to am very similar size to you ..same height, smidgen lighter (91kg) and ride both shorties of similar volume and longboards.
Whilst being a relative newcomer to the many years of sage advice on this forum, ..... is the board for grovel days, big flowing point breaks, to be a wave hoare (not that there anything wrong with that ), or ...?

I have a 9'3 x 23 x 2.75 that is my bigger longboard and allrounder and also a 9'1 x 22.5 x 2.5 that is my more performance longboard. What I find is I am not riding the 9'3 as most of the time I want a LB is when it it really small ..so more log style would suit. I do ride my 9'1 on big days and long points

The question you need to ask is....what do you want the board for ...then decide on size ...thats my thoughts, but I am new to this

It has been a few years.

$$$ I know I get what I pay for, but as little as possible at this stage. Finding the right board is always a long process and justifying another board to a wife that doesn't understand surfing, well it's a challenge in itself lucky she agreed to allowing at least 1 surf a week in our wedding vowels

9'6 about 5 inches longer then I was looking at but I'll keep that in mind.

Hey Climber, I was after an allrounder, bit of nose riding (if I can get there quick enough) but more important a board that I don't have to fight to turn. But it will come back to feel and fit for the style of longboard surfing I develop a joy for. Definitely after a point board for probably 5 foot or less surf and the occasional beach break if possible.

I'm more around the 6'3" 106kg mark and have 2x McT fireballs, the 9'1" and the 9'6". I'm about 16kg heavier than recommended weight for the 9'1" board but it is my go too. Even in big fat waves that are little more than cut back practice it is great fun and rewards the harder paddle. I do miss more waves using it but the waves are a lot more fun when you get a good one.

Another advantage of the McT is that they have made a hell of a lot of pop outs from Thailand so you can find them in any condition and will fit any budget. If you find you love it then you could buy a customised one for the price of your first car!

Personally, i'd go direct to the shaper and tell em where your surfing and how you want to surf, your height, weight, etc etc etc...

There's an abundance of awesome shapers on the QLD coast and it wont cost you much more (often less) and you'll have something that works for you rather than something you'll make work... plus your supporting the heart and soul of our craft rather than some money grabbing corporation.

My picks are SDR at Clearwater or Josh at Creative Army... but like I said, there's a bunch of em up that way, just walk in and have a chat broo

Just tell her its better than spending your money on horses, hookers and blow.
Try to keep a straight face while looking her right in the eye when saying this to her.

How many times can you use this line though? Pretty sure she would get tired of it by the second time around - but you seem to replace your boards at a pretty steady pace So what are a few other lines that you use?

I'm 6'3" but heavier at 97kg had a 10'0" X 23"X 3" which was great up to waist high. My log now is 9'5" 22 3/4 X 2 3/4" and that good to head high, but haven't had it out over that. Two complete different shapes though Particularly the rails.

So I'm slowly narrowing it down, but confused on the length. Went to a few board shops yesterday (on the Gold Coast) to have look and chat. I've been suggested to buy a log or allrounder (not sure if it was just a sales pitch at one place). Here's a better idea of what I'm after.
• Something to ride waves up to about 4 foot
• Want to be able to turn but occasionally have a go at going to the nose
• Ride point breaks, but the occasional beach break

Was suggested:
• Beau Young Seaplane or Vintage Log any size will do above 9' - Surfboard Warehouse
• 9'6 Watercooled or 9'+ Clearwater - Board Culture
• 9' Shane surfboard - Goodtime
• 9' + Retro Groove Logger or Diverse Noserider

Leave it up to you guys for feedback

My 10' 0" was a Vintage log, great for small waves, and exceptional value for money in comparison to the boards double the price, however with the imports they are no where near the quality of locally shaped boards in my experience but still represent value for money in my opinion. Regardless the vintage log will be OK if all you wanted to do was get to the nose but right it off all together if your wanting some thing a little progressive.

At your weight and height id be steering people towards the region of 9'5"ish if your returning to Longboards particularly if you have an interest in getting to the nose.

On the other hand but if skill levels are above average your 9'0"' region should be fine

That's just my opinion.

Nope

Clearwater could say Whalebone
McTavish could say Fireball
906 in length, the guys suggesting a log can't be fair dinkum ( sales pitch )
Seaplane forget that it has the wrong shape nose for any form of Nose Riding unless your name is Beau.

This isnt the nose riding thread. The board will do it. Nose ride and you dont have to be by
In fact mr mac you got more trim and better speed turns on the sea plane then ive seen on any of your boards. In just 3 waves
You should get one if your interested in surfing and give the art caper away
