WHY I DELETED INSTAGRAM Firstly I want to apologise to anyone who has wasted any time looking at my Facebook page or Instagram over the last few years. Sincerely, I was trying to keep the 1960s history alive and sell a couple of photos. nothing more. Forgive me. 1) Narcissism. Instagram is shallow and narcissistic. Particularly with surfing culture. It makes me ashamed to be a surfer. Look at the surfing accounts, what are they doing? Most surfing instagram accounts are just a 'click like' and scroll to the next perfect photo, the next perfect video, or a call to purchase some more landfill. 2) Addiction. Instagram has been intentionally designed to manipulate dopamine-driven feedback loops that ignite the same neural pathways in the brain the pokie machines target. Addiction. From an irregular rewards system, right down to a three-second delay on loading to spike an anticipatory dopamine release. Deliberately addictive and messing with your mind. If you are addicted, the best thing you can do NOW is google 'turn my iphone to grayscale' and instal that function. 3) TIME. THIS IS THE BIG ONE!!! AN HOUR A DAY LOOKING AT INSTAGRAM IS 365 HOURS A YEAR AND THAT IS = TO 9 WEEKS OF FULL TIME WORK!!! Think about that..now imagine it is Jan 1st and I asked you which 9 weeks this year you would volunteer to look at Instagram for 40 hours a week for 9 weeks and not get paid a cent? 9 weeks full time work each year to the line the pockets of someone else's narcissism. 5) Instagram (and others) are part of the global mission to acquire as much data on you as possible, so they can affect your decision making. In some instances companies have over 30, 000 data points on your ISP and if that doesn't concern you, just roll over and let them tickle your tummy. 6) Instagram is fake. Many, if not most of the photos are just a staged illusion trying to sell a dream lifestyle. Trying to sell you something. If you look, every 3rd or 4th post is an advertisement. A 'sponsored ad'. 7) Some people (millions of people) spend over 5 hours a day on social media. One study suggests more than 50% of smartphone users acquire more than 5 hours 'screentime' per day. I simply do not want to contribute to that. It feels evil and wrong. Again, apologies for anyone who actually wasted time looking at my account. 8) Across the board, increased social media use has been found to positively correlate with anxiety and depression. If you haven't noticed people getting more and more edgy, anxious and depressed since the iphone invention - then you are probably staring at your phone getting depressed as well. Not only depressed, but by the time you are staring at the thing for 3 hours a day (the global average) you basically have another job! No wonder you are so 'busy'. 9) Look at what are the most popular accounts on Instagram. It is worse than the top ten in the music charts. Makes me ashamed to be a human, actually. Voted 100% democratically by us, the population. Here we had an opportunity to vote people of SUBSTANCE into power.but no, we failed. Again. The people in POWER on Instagram, who are they? Narcissistic, empty, soul less fodder. 10) The sheer volume of tits'n'arse in surfing, on instagram, is mind boggling. I get it, tits sell. Some of these surfing tits and arse accounts have a million followers. They get $30k+ for a paid post. What are they offering to the world? Tits and arse and the masses are buying it. It is my hope for surfing that everytime someone puts a photo online that is pretty and releases those feel good yippee surfing is amazing vibe - I hope people unfollow that account. Photos that have 500+ 'likes' and not one comment, they are the problem. These shallow accounts are all the rage. Every surfer has one it seems. Why? Digital technology is overtaking us.every hour you waste on it is another hour they have more information about your preferences. It is another hour you could have been playing with your kids, or talking to a friend, or hanging at the beach. It is another hour you will regret on your death bed. I am encouraging you, if you have read this far, to seriously look at your social media addiction and ask the big questions and ideally, if you can, delete Instagram (and Facebook) from your life.
