Looks cool

Very nice I'm sure your daughter will love it BUT come on who are you fooling not me YOU want it

Yes, but a check of dimensions, the boards and mine, may reveal a deficiency of float.
I have a new one happening next door for me

Good dad

For sure it's a grey area however, for me, when I say 'midlength' about a surfboard, I mean a pretty specific thing. In the same way that a fish isn't called a shortboard despite being short. And a glider isn't called a longboard despite being long, there's a bunch of stuff that just doesn't cut it as a 'midlength' despite being somewhere between 7ish and 8ish feet long. Including but not limited to: Guns, Mini-mals, big/old guy shortboards, 70's single fins, anything with too much rocker, etc etc... arguably anything thruster or quad.

Call me a pedant if you like but, f#*k it, I've been riding these boards longer than pretty much anyone and it would be nice to have a recognisable identity around them. It's not like 'midlength ' is the greatest moniker, but it's getting a good hold on the strength of the generally more broad minded Californian underground, so I'm running with it.

Great post mate, I recall many moons ago I rode a 8 footer and loved it, I found I sat in the middle of the long and shortboarder take off zones, I felt lost at times maybe that's good place to seat.

8ftr isn't a midlength...

Well said Salty. ****ing hate people calling midlengths Minimals.

Midlength has not much to do with length really. Sure they are longer then a standard shorty. 7ft range

For me They are flat rockered, usually eggy in outline. Single fin or 2 plus 1. Foiled down rails. Usually a bit of edge in the back and softer up front.
I guess Kinda based of the G&S magic model of the 70s when boards started going shorter

Maybe something like this..flatish rocker..60;40 rails..slight concave..
8' x 22 1/2" x 3"

It's an 8ftr.

I kinda put mids under 8ft. Think cause when I grew up 8ftrs were a thing with their own comp divisions etc.

Nice looking board though. Is that the pie burger replacement?

Sweet, looks like a nice board, probably carries a bit less foam then a pie burger the same size.

Happy daughter had her first surf before work yesterday.
Caught waves, loved the board.

Her boyfriend Jack, who is an experienced shortboarder thought it was pretty good in crappy conditions too.

Does this count as a mid length. I have had it a few months now. I bought if for the bigger days but I cant stop riding it no matter what the size. My wave count and paddle speed it off the charts now!!

Was getting some nice ones yes, but had to go to Newcastle again. Home tomorrow.

Cool animation!

Has anyone got to know any kind of long fishish kind of board? My mind is turning over some ideas, I'm imagining something well longer than a proper fish but still short by midlength standards. trying to dream up an all rounder travel board. A stretched fish with a full outline, but nice fine rails, two keel fins. Really just a way of getting more planing area in a shorter package than I can get away with with a single. Not interested in quads, not asking for specific board recommendations just thoughts, ideas or experiences. Cheers!

Maybe something like this?

joelfitzgeraldsurfboards.com/collections/frontpage/products/dream-catcher

I haven't ridden one but I was close to pulling the trigger on the Sea Gypsy model before I picked up the Fat Arse. They are pretty quick to respond to email if you have questions.

Also, Gary McNeill makes some nice fishy twins.

You could run twin keels on this ...or bonza?
6,8 would be a sweet all rounder

Thanks guys, Dream Catcher looks like a pretty straight up modern fish to me, Sea Gypsy is kindof similar to what I ride now. Interestingly I was running my hands over a 6'8 Nautilas earlier today, nice looking board and kind of heading in the direction I'm imagining... anyone surfed one in 2' and 6' ? Looks to be more optimised for the bigger stuff to my mind, pretty pulled in, fair bit of rocker.
Just to be clear, I make my own boards so am just using the forum to explore the concept, see who's ridden things similar to my imaginings and hopefully get some kind of feedback on the idea.

Nah ...I've only had a quick 2 waves on a 6,2 nautilus, but didn't really get a good feel for it...but it did feel fast down the line .
I spend a fair bit of time feeling up the Christensen's at the shop. He has quite a unique style. Definitely got something going on....from those smooth but pinch rails to where his bottom contours start. It like he breaks the bottom of the board into 3 equal parts.
the left rail takes up 1/3 of the board...his vee or concave just the middle third and then the right rail....if that makes sense?
i shape afew myself and often try and copy his bottom contours. I have 2 x fails in the garage that I can't quite get right!
