where

a usual haunt. the spit was horrible . went for a quick hello to the usual lurkers.then on the outside bank was just throwing some nice waves. super clean and had a semi side offshore just holding them up ever so nicely funny thing was the lifeguards had the flags set up about 100mt down the beach. the inside was horrible and nasty...then those bloody clubbies

LOL.....nah waves aren't as loud as last night, but they're making enough noise to indicate it will probably be chest high

haha I know mate...grabbing another Pale Ale, enjoying the mid morning tide kick swells lately. Its been funny, wind has kicked in cross-shore sending in 4 or 5 regs. They've bailed & then its backed off for me & one or 2 peeps just as consistency & size has picked up...basically been the pattern for 5 weeks now. Suits my afternoon shifts & beer drinking habits perfectly

Lasted 20 minutes today . Too paranoid about that Noah that's hanging around. It was spotted this morning shadowing a school of Salmon. Not many out surfing . Noticed in the news there's a big one hanging around Newcastle as well. My regular spot should be ok tomorrow when the wind comes back around NE.

Yeah. I saw that clip from down there.

We are into our 6th day of closed beaches.
They keep spotting them. Yes there are at least 2.

Funniest comment I heard was a guy on the news last night .

He drove 30 minutes south of here and went surfing and thought he was safe. A shark on the move would cover the distance in hour as well..

Reports from down here reckon its a white pointer around 15 feet or more long and a tiger shark as well. The flags were up this morning but not many takers. I heard its a big white pointer up there as well.

I was in Newcastle for a meeting this morning and swung past Merewether around 7:30am and counted 3 blokes on body boards - the rest of the place was deserted. Weird ! ! ! But to be fair I would be staying out as well.

Even though we are not very far from you SP I have not even thought about them whilst surfing the last few days. Weird for me.

SMH - that thing down your way sounds far to big for my liking ! ! ! Maybe you should just be on the 666 until it heads away

Fark... Keeps getting worse...

UPDATE: 4:54PM: SHE is big, but is she the biggest?

Newcastle Herald photographer Peter Stoop has snapped some frames of a ??very large shark?? cruising off Burwood Beach on Thursday only minutes after onlookers watched on from land as an injured dolphin was being chased offshore.

As Stoop was photographing the shark, which was described as being more than three metres long, a second large shark was seen biting into another dolphin near the breakwall on the northern edge of Nobbys Beach.

Lifeguards have confirmed that both sharks were ??very large??, but could not get a good enough look to confirm whether could either may have been the five-metre, 1700kg goliath which has roamed the city?s beaches since Saturday.

Lifeguards on jetskis powered from Nobbys down to the southern end of Merewether and off Burwood beaches after 2pm on Thursday following reports that a very large shark was feeding off something.

There have been reports that it may have been a 2.5-metre long bronze whaler.

As Stoop hovered overhead, he snapped another shark believed to be larger and possibly a great white.

After the lifeguard confirmed the Burwood shark, he was called back to Nobbys where he confirmed that the other large shark had fed on a dolphin, leaving part of the carcass behind as the jetski got close.

local beach closed here on the weekend after a shark siting - turned out to be a seal .

2 of us surfed quite happily with him on Tuesday night .Big bugger but didn't worry about us .

was a surfer chased out of the same beach few years back by another obviously much crankier seal .

talking to a few local fishermen been a few big ( really big ) great whites spotted off the coast here the last few weeks

There must have been a few out, unless the media are playing games again.
Can someone tell me what the red flag means exactly? Is it beach closed, or is it specific to sharks

Up at 5:30 for me drove all the way down to Trigg and gave up, went home and got back into bed before work. The issue up my way is the tides are too low so early. Mid morning seems to be it, just as i start working

It the terrorgraph JB. Good sport section and that's about it the rest borders in tabloid. Monday headline was giant maneaters stalk our beaches or something.

But the red flag is just surf closed, used for all times they close the beach be it large surf, whatever.

Those photos I think are from earlier in the week.
It was treated as a bit of a novelty at first, lot less people out as the weeks gone on but been people out each day.
They haven't really been in that close to shore.
Until today, supposedly one was munching on a dolphin bout 20m from the beach.

Beautiful summation there SP.

There was footage on the news of people swimming in the shore break today from Newcastle beach in front of the lifeguards - who said that they can not stop them - just educate them of the dangers. It did not look like hundreds more like 5 or 10 of them. It was so hot today its almost understandable. I went for a swim this arvo and it was beautiful. Shame those Newcastle fellas are unable to enjoy it for a 6th day. Certainly makes the breaks down this way a bit busier than normal - lets hope that shark clears off shortly

Theirs talk almost a few i know that say one could be a faiths female and they are wondering if it could be a birthing issue.

SP i also heard talk about a photo that showed some surfers and the shark swimming under them blissfully unaware. Photo was taken from the chopper. I can't find the reference now but their was actually no picture.

Thanks for the info on flags. I know its been discussed in the shark threads but a flag system is used in South Africa via the Shark spotters program that is really good
