Hi Formula Foil and iQ Foil Crew.

We are pleased to announce the Foil Racing calendar for NSW 2022/2023 season.

This year we have a few different events to try and explore more of NSW, test different conditions, try different tactics and support a range of clubs up and down the coast.

We have paid special attention to avoid conflicts with Sail Sydney, Sail Melbourne, Foiling Nationals, and the NSW Slalom rounds. As a result, there are some pretty big gaps in the race calendar! To try and fill these we also have a few marathon events planned in combination with some of the sailing clubs and classes.

Official NOR is pending but advanced warning is for 6 foil race events this season. There is a Google Calendar you can link to here www.windsurfingnsw.com/calendar/. (Click the +Google link at the bottom of the calendar). Details below.

NSW Formula Foil & iQ 2022/2023 Race Series
F1. 8/Oct @ PBSC 1 day
F2. 29 or 30/Oct @ MPSC best forecast day to be decided (Foils only)
F3. 19 and 20/Nov @ JBSC Callala Bay - Book an AirBNB soon!
F4. 19/Feb @ KCC - Windsurfing Festival with many classes
F5. 4/Mar @ SGSC - To celebrate the new clubhouse
F6. 19/Mar @ KCC - Final Round & Awards

Non-Series Events:
13-18/Dec Sail Sydney
13-17/Jan Sail Melb iQ Qualifiers
26/Jan/2023 Botany Bay Marathon (from KCC - be early as access gets shut off by about 9am!)
5/Feb/2023 Heaven Can Wait Marathon MPSC - Lake Macquarie
3-5 Feb 2023 or 10-12 Feb 2023 Foiling Nationals - TBC! QLD
6/May/2023 Peter Loft Marathon BYRA - Pitt Water

Art curtesy of +++++++++"DALL-E" ai model.

Venues
PBSC = Palm Beach Sailing Club - very Northern Beaches
MPSC = Marmong Point Sailing Club - Lake Macquarie
KCC = Kurnell Catamaran Club - Botany Bay southeast
SGSC = St George Sailing Club - Taren Point
JBSC = Jarvis Bay Sailing Club - Callala Bay
BYRA = Bayview Yacht Racing Association - Northern Beaches

Volunteers
Please let me know if you (or a parent, relative, sibling, friend, coaches) can volunteer in any capacity.

Membership Due!
Also, the insurance policy rolls over 1/Sep/2022 so if you have not joined a club this financial year, we would encourage you to do so.

Wind-Wings
We didn't really get any Windings at the course races last year but if any show up we could accomodate. I'm keen to see how fast they can go.

Hi again everyone and a special call out to anyone who is curious about racing but hasn't competed before.
The WSNSW website has been updated with notice of race, sailing instructions, and most importantly the event registration pages!
www.windsurfingnsw.com/classes/windfoil/

For anyone curious about racing we have a new low price offer of just $20/ day to come and try foil course racing. You will also get to choose an AUS-???? Sail number. It still makes sense to join one of the sailing clubs for annual 3rd party insurance if you intend to come to multiple events.

OK Crew it is time to get serious and pay-up to register for the year.

1. Join a club. Marmongor & SGSC have the cheapest annual memberships with Insurance for $50. Some clubs also charge more for local race season too. You need to have the 3rd party insurance to compete.
2. Join the Foil series (and maybe Slalom GPS while you are at it!) at www.windsurfingnsw.com/series-entry-portal/
3. Check the Sailing Instructions and Notice of Race at www.windsurfingnsw.com/classes/windfoil/

This year I also want to run some GPS replays so PLEASE BRING ANY GPS device set to 1hz recording and post to KA72 before 9pm.
If you have a GoPro it is always good to get some footage from on-course.

For any new-comers WindWing or WindFoil
Please register for the next event ($20/day this year) and think about some identification on your sail. The number 1 is taken, but you can use an X1 with tape or Y11 etc so the race committee can identify you as you cross the finish line. you need a life jacket, helmet, and foil gear to race.

Hi Foilers

We start the new season for the foils this Saturday at Palm Beach Sailing Club with a gentle start, racing with the NSW Raceboard crew and big discounts for first time racers!

Check out the details and register here www.windsurfingnsw.com/join/.

Racing will start at 2pm, with a briefing at 1pm.

The gates will be open from 11am. There is an overflow area that we can use and can accommodate 30 cars close to the rigging area. There will be a parking marshal to point people into the free parking area otherwise its about $35 per day (for Council parking.). There is alternative parking for those with a Northern Beaches Parking sticker.

We will probably have 4 races back-to-back, so it would be a good idea to take drinks and snacks out on the water. You can leave water bottles on the club support vessels. The Sailing club is not serving food so it's recommended that participants bring all their necessities for the day (lunch /water /sunscreen). There is also a small cafe "Greedy Goat" about 100 m away which is good for eat in or take away. For those who want to kick on, Club Palm Beach (formerly the Palm Beach RSL) is nearby for Fish n Chips or a Chicken Parmy after sailing. clubpalmbeach.com.au/ Bistro hours 11:30am - 8:30pm so we should be able to get food after racing, whenever we finish.

Come along and join in the thrills and spills.

REMEMBER YOUR GPS

Formula Foil 2022/23 Round 2

Round 2 of the NSW Foil Races was hosted in style at Marmong Point, NSW, AU. Big Huge Thanks again to our volunteers.

The forecast was tricky with a fading westerly forecast for Saturday and a Southerly turning*- NE for Sunday. The locals considered the options and were swayed by the recent forecast during the week that were half as strong as the actual winds on the day. A call was made for early racing from 11 and it proved to be a good call! Saturday winds were a gusty 10-20 knots on the water with occasional lulls down to 5 and gusts over 25! The course was set by Byron and Nick starting on the far side of the lake near Warners Bay and the upwind mark north of MPSC near Spears Point. Jason and Ian then volunteered on the boat, setting up a GoPro 360 and taking score. Races were run as tight as possible and we managed 5 races back-to-back before the wind started fading and we headed in. Most of the sailors picked 900 to 1000 wings and 7 to 9m sails with a few on safer options for the gusts.

Race 1
I got my first win in course racing! Race 1 was mine! It took every gram of concentration to get around the course dry as some of the gusts were extreme! My gear choice gave me leverage over the foil for control (Patrik 100 wide v2 board), slightly smaller F4 850cm2 front wing. In retrospect the upwind speed was my weakest element so maybe should have gone larger, but then the downwind speed was nice! I managed to hang onto the 9.0m Phantom and take it to the line! Dave had a moment, nearly 'going over early' at the start line but managed to keep it under control for a slower start. Tibor started well at the boat tightly followed by Barry while Nick and James got underway at speed in the mid-field and Mick taking control of his EZZY sail in the gusty conditions.

Race 2
By now Dave (the 'Boss') had started to acclimatise to his new foil dominating us all. Riding his Boss 1000 wing under his Patrik 100 v2 and Duotone 8m sail he kept it in front but not without a few spills, going over the front at the start of the second upwind leg! Fast recoveries definitely helping! James made a fast lunge for the line while Ian and Tibor hugged the boat a few seconds late. Ian did a good job to keep Nick in his sights all the way around. Dave won again but only just as he nearly threw it in the drink racing towards the line, while Byron did well to steal 2nd place from me.

Race 3
Sail choice was tricky, when the wind kicked in those of us on the 9's maybe struggling for control a bit more than those on 8m. Despite Byron and my good start, Dave got away from us again on the first leg while Byron and I swapped places on the upwind legs with Nick getting a powerful run upwind and down, catching the eyes of some spectators! I was about to make it to the top mark ahead of Byron but I sailed too far into a wind shadow while Byron used local knowledge to stay in the wind line and got ahead of me by the bottom mark. I chased for the rest of the race, finishing a few metres behind for 3rd. Ian did well to finish the full open foil course on his 8.0m, and conservative choice of a Starboard 800 wing.

Race 4
More of the same out front with Byron and Dave slightly ahead at the line while I was too conservative, but this time Nick got a particularly good first leg on his slalom AC sail, Starboard board and 900 foil, as some were caught by a lull moments after the starting horn sounded. My larger sail helped in some of the lulls but hurt in the gusts as the 'fading' wind got more erratic. By halfway Dave had a small lead, I was following closely, with Byron again hot on my heels. Somehow Byron made up 70s to beat me over the line after I stalled! The field spread out more for race 4 due to the variable winds.

Mid-Race Entertainment
While waiting for the start I queue some music with a UE Boom in my pouch and 'got my groove on' much to the amusement of the audience. making sure to shut it off for the race start so those around me could hear the horn.

Race 5
For the last race I queued up some music and after crossing the line set the beats to "Pump It" by the Black-Eyed Peas. Byron and I were on the line down near the pin while Nick got a fast start right by the boat but after half a leg he was just below me cringing to my bad karaoke voiceover as I "Pumped It" upwind to get ahead with the advantage of a bigger sail. Dave was long gone by the second top mark rounding, but Byron got to the top just ahead of me and I chased him downwind to the sounds of "Baby did a bad bad thing". I gybed with him, just a metre behind and chased him, but didn't cover his next gybe thinking I could make it through a lull over to the next wind line and skip 2x extra gybes. Byron pushed through the gap and found pressure on the shore line (north) and had good speed making up for the extra turns. On the last leg I came toward the mark from the south while Byron came towards me from the north, he gybed just below me and we raced for the bottom mark, with a Hollywood finish to the line, separated by cm's for a photo finish that he won! Shame the GoPro battery was done!

There are a lot of young and talented wind foilers in NSW riding on IQ foil, Patrik Windfoil One and formula kit. How can we entice them to start racing in these events?

I'm unsure. From last year's quite large cohort, there's only a handful of members from Hunters Hill Sailing Club registered with WNSW this season. Of the balance, one now represents Thailand (Will), one is doing Sail GP & winging (Tash), the Northern Beaches IQ foilers are now wingfoil racing in the Kiteboarding Australia wingfoil series & I'm unsure about the rest. Last year, there were over 20 youth members from Stormriders & Woolahra Sailing Club and none of them reregistered this year. WNSW did not receive any nominations for youth coordinator for the current season.
Sail Sydney may bring back some youth windfoil members as it's an AS prescribed windfoil event.

There is a great forecast for some 20 knot winds tthis weekend at Callala Bay on the north end of Jervis Bay.

The Jervis Bay Sailing Club is hosting the next round of the NSW Formula Foil / iQ series. We will be joined by the Raceboards at this event. WindWings also welcome.
Jervis Bay Sailing Club

There are plenty of AirBnB's around and a few share rooms available if needed. Just DM me for info.
Jervis Bay is an absolutely amazing location with a host of wild life and spectacular scenery for those on the water or land!
We are looking forward to two days of epic racing! And maybe a spot of free practice training on Friday if you get there early enough.

Not Jervis Bay. but fun competition ahead.

Please pre-register at the WNSW website. Link at the first post in this thread.

The JBSC put on a great day of racing in lively 15-25kt NE breeze on Saturday. Callala Bay is an amazing venue just watchout for the 40kt Westerlies! Sunday was a blow-out.

Most of the foil crew were on 7.8-8.0m sails and 100cm Patrik boards. Dave and I started on 1000mm wide wings while Tom was smarter and downgraded to 900. I joined him on a smaller wing for Race 3 which helped me keep it dry! Despite the small wind chop, the downwind runs were treacherous, especially when a +10kt gust hit from behind - the acceleration was savage !

Video from Race 3 shows Dave using his downwind speed to get ahead of me on his Boss foils - brutally fast if a little twitchy!

Good times for the dedicated foilers!

Well... we certainly didn't lap the Raceboards!

Thank-you to St George for hosting us and to everyone who made the journey despite the weak forecast.

The series organisers have reviewed first mark rounding and finishing times for yesterday's races and note that these were outside the time limits set in the Sailing Instructions for the series. As such, unless anyone has any major objections, we won't count yesterday's races towards the series.

Hope to see everyone and the wind at the next round, which will be at Kurnell Catamaran Club on SUNDAY the 19th of March - two weeks from today.
