I did spend some time pondering the equivalent single fin length that will match the thruster set-up. This is what I did.

Firstly -> measured the actual fin areas of the Severne 210 & 230 fins. They no longer print these on the fin. Got 183cm2 and 206cm2 respectively. I also found a picture of an older 125 thruster fin with the fin area stated as 77cm2




Second ->

Plotted all of the know fin lenth and areas in my collection - Blue = wave , orange = slalom.
Fitted a curve through the blue ones (y = 22.967 exp(0.0973x)). R2 = 0.9965 so not too shabby.





Three ->

Added the total surface area for the thruster setup.

Dyno 85 (2x125 +210) = 337cm2
Dyno 105 (2x125 + 230) = 360cm2

That is quite a bit of fin area.

next

back calculated the equivalent single fin length using the above relationship, got

Dyno 85 = 27.6 cm so the two side thrusters add ~ 6.5 cm
Dyno 105 = 28.3 cm so the two side thrusters add ~5 cm

So quite close to the guesstimate of 4cm.

Interested if this matched what people experience on the water.



That's a fascinating bit of maths.
I just go with feel, and swapping my centre fin for a shorter one brought instant results, especially in waves, and other Dyno owners in my area have found the same thing. It also works to use the back of the mast track on this board.
We use this board for wave sailing here, rather than blasting.
I guess the bigger sizes are more likely to be used with a single fin, and with bigger rigs, on blasting days.

I guess comparing a tri fin set up with a single fin one is a bit problematic. Because with a single fin you are nowadays looking for speed over turning. The longer single fin is not just about fin area, but about the torque load or lift that single fin brings, allowing the board to fly off its tail more.
And you'd also use the single fin with the outboard footstrap settings.
So finding the 'equivalent' single fin to match the usual tri fin cluster is not just about fin area. That fin area might give you an idea of sideways 'grip' but then, at planing speeds, the types of 'lift' generated from the different fin set ups is not the same.

We've had a good run of bigger 3-5 foot mast high wave sessions and the 85L Dyno has been great! It's definitely not a 'wave' board but doesn't disgrace itself. It's speed and pointing ability got me lots more waves than I would have got on a pure wave board and it's chop handling was great when the wave surface wasn't perfect.

I tried a set of old Drake 11s yesterday instead of the stock 12.5s and it's a big improvement on a wave, turns heaps tighter and you don't loose much in the way of early planing, speed or pointing. They aren't coming out any time soon. Still using the 17cm rear.

Hey Relaspe, what sail were your running there with 85


4.8 S1 Pro that day, have used it down to a 3.6m S1 Pro in bigger surf and it was still good. Crazy wind range

Just bought one of these. Its the original version with the light blue and orange colouring. Looks like a 20 cm middle fin with two 12.5 sides. Any idea what wind i need to get planing and try this board? Im 72 kgs and normally race slalom/foils and am looking to play in waves. Cheers. :)

I'm 80 kg and use the Dyno 95L (2021 version) from around 23kn on with a 5.5 sail.
I guess with your 72kg and a 5.5 sail - which is the max recommended sail size for this board - you should get planing around 20kn.
Depends really on the sail sizes you have in your quiver. With a 4.7 - which I think is the sweet spot of this board - you?d need around 25kn.

Always referring to Crossover/Wave sails, not slalom sails obviously :-)

Cheers mate, i was hoping to use my 5.8 on this and get going in under 20 knots. Guess i may not be able to.

I just looked at the Severne Page - seems I was wrong. They recommend the board from 4.7 to 6.5m2. Seems a bit large as recommendation to me, but then your 5.8 will certainly be ok for the Dyno 95 and get you going at around 18 kn.

I'm a similar weight to you and my Dyno 95 would plane in about 20knots with a 5.2m rig. But this will also depend on wave conditions and on any current.
That's the biggest size sail I'd want to use for wave sailing, and the supplied fins are fine for this rig size, but can be reduced for use with smaller sails. I think I was using a 17cms centre fin in the tri fin set up.

The Dyno 95 will of course take up to a 6.5m rig and would plane earlier in sub 20knot conditions - but you probably wouldn't then be wave sailing and it would be better to fit a single slalom fin in the back end for flat water blasting, with the thruster boxes blanked off.

Sailed Dyno v1 85L yesterday with 4.7 and 4.2 Blade Pros. Good balanced board. Took me an hour to get used to that combo especially at my weight 85kg. It's a sinker.. but I care less if there is enough wind to waterstart. Fairly easy to slog, sail and good in chop. Gets on the plane well similar to my freestyle board with quick pump of the sail and front foot push.. Only complain is footstraps width of 16.5 cm comparing to 15-15.5 standard so had to use one hole down on one side.

Funny after 2 hours on 4.2 I got out to take a break and couldn't get back in as waves got bigger and that 4.2 blade pulled so gently that I couldn't gain enough slogging speed to get out.. and didn't have time to switch back to 4.7 lol
Also loved landing from a few jumps nose first which pierced the water nicely and surfaced without problems. Like old days on 3S when I did it all the time.

Now I wonder how this board sails with say 6m sail and single fin at my weight...? What wind speed for plaining..?
On my freestyle 101L board and 6m sail I think I can plain in 15-16 knots. Looked at some windsurf sail calculators online but they are wrong in my case as at 85kg they list 115L as minimum uphaulable volume which in practice (for me) is about 95-100L not 115..

Thanks in part to the helpful advice here, I took delivery of a Dyno V3 85 last week.

There's quite a lot of advice already for using these boards in stronger winds than you might expect (and smaller than recommended sails), but not so much about use with BIGGER sails, so perhaps I can add something here.

I'm a real lightweight(!) at only 65kgs, and last weekend I tested this board in 14-15knts with a 6.4m sail (an old Gaastra Remedy). Although outside of the recommended range, I was up and planing immediately, never dropped off the plane, and the board felt surprisingly good. I was continuously swapping back to my ancient 90ltr freeride board that'd I'd usually be on, and although it felt faster (and probably was), there wasn't that much difference and the Dyno is MUCH nicer in every other way. This was with the recommended 28cm single fin option. Comments from others on the beach suggested that the Dyno looked more fun too.

I did ask Severne about whether this option might work for my weight, and they basically said "marginal but doable". I have to concur.

I'm doing this to cut down my board quiver and the above means that I can replace two old boards with one new one, which is quite a result if you only have a small car! Foe me a 4.6m is probably the smallest I'll use it with so I don't see any problems there.

Hope that's useful to someone anyway.

I'll post an update once I've had a chance to use it a few more times.

Actually very helpful info. Your board volume to weight is basically 20L/20kg down from my 105 and we can plane in pretty much same wind with same sail on 85 and me on 105. Even same fin length. So using very unsophisticated math I guess I will need about 19 knots of wind to start planing on my Dyno 85 with 6m sail.

Funnily enough on that day there were only a few "normal sized" others out, and they were all on 105 ltr boards and 6.5s, so your unsophisticated math is better than you think .

I wonder where you guys prefer your footstraps (forward, middle, more to the back). Especially the back footstrap and mast position on 85/95.

When I used my 85 in big disorganized chop a few days ago I noticed that somehow the board likes to jump and hang in the air in a more horizontal position. Likely more due to the technique but I think that my Quatro Quad has its nose a bit more vertical in the air. Again all subjective and conditions cannot repeat . but maybe some one noticed anything similar..? Asking because in my mind that nose more vertical feeling shall likely happen more on Dyno since the rider position is so to the back.. Cube is 2cm shorter but likely makes no difference.

I sail my Dyno 85 v2 with front straps furthest forward, rear straps second-to-last holes to the rear, and mast foot 1 inch back from centre. I'm 6'3" and 78kg. Feel more "over the board" that way for a wavier set up.

As I said earlier in this thread, shift the mast foot back and put the front footstraps in the front holes.
If you are wave sailing, obviously in the tri fin set up, then reduce the length of the centre fin to 16/17cms and the board is transformed.
That is certainly my experience with the 85 and 95 sizes.

Thanks Guys. Have you noticed any changes of the board position in the air when jumping with your changes...?

I wish I can just take my Quatro Cube and Dyno to the beach together and test with same sails back to back but my workflow is different as I live 2 blocks from the beach where I sail and I always take a single board tie max 2 sails to the boom and walk to the beach...don't want to leave anything on beach here.. as it's a public beach. I know, lame excuse. Maybe next time need to load 2 boards into my car and park by the beach..

I'm trying to understand the changes from v2 to v3 of the Dyno. I read they shifted the volume of the board around and wanted to understand what that means from sailing and maneuverability. I'm a light weight guy at 65 kg (145 lb), and feel a lot of full on wave boards have too much volume towards the front of the board making them difficult to handle. I borrowed a 85 v2 from a friend and liked how it was balanced compared to my 95 Quattro Quad. I never really clicked with my Quad. Is the v3 similar?
I should mention I rarely sail waves anymore so would likely set it up with a single fin for flat and chop.
I'm open to other board recommendations.

I have the 95 dyno and is use it for waves. I dont like the Dyno as a single fin, but its nice as a thruster in waves, so thats what i use it for. :)
If i want to have fun, go fast in chop, and gybe easily, i use my 105 Rocket. I can use it with anything from a full race sail to a wave sail and have a great time on it, and i only weigh about 10kgs more than you.

I agree the dyno is a very average ride as a singo. Very fun and user friendly as thruster.

I still need a smaller board for 25+ winds. I'd like to stick with a single fin bump and jump around 95-85 liters. I heard the JP Freestyle wave is pretty good for light guys. Anyone know anything about this board?

Really? I was sure they still made them as recently as a year or two ago. If not, i use the 105 in everything even over 30 knots with a wave sail and its still great. I dont weight more than 75 kgs either, so maybe a 105 will do the job for you. :)

I am 62kg, and used dyno v1 95, sold it, got v2 85, then sold it too.
I think dyno is not a good board for lightweights. First of all its tail is too wide, you need to use outside straps to put enough leverage, especially with supplied fins which are huge for smaller sizes, but even if you buy small fins, tail is still too wide for 3 footstrap configuration. Dyno is mainly designed as trifin and 3 straps, but does well as single fin too.
If you plan to use with single fin and outside straps then you don't have much options at 85lt or below, dyno is one of very few options.
Second reason is the footstrap width, 16,5cm!, if your feet are not disproportionately wide compared to your weight class, you need to skip a hole, but then it becomes too tight because hole placement is too far apart. I wear 42 EU size sport shoes and i couldn't find a footstrap trim.

In my opinion at 25+kn you should be looking at 75lt boards, but if you insist on 4 footstraps and single fin, options start at 85lt. There are only 2 boards that i know of (except some slalom/speed boards, customs and older boards) with outside footstraps at 85lt, severne dyno and exocet cross. I would highly recommend exocet cross carbon 84lt for your intended use, powered up blasting and b&j. New cross has trifin option but its mainly designed as single fin.

Jp fsw has a narrow tail and looks good for "do it all board" for lightweights, it was on my radar too, but outside strap option starts at 94lt and bigger, for 25+kn it would still be a handful to control especially if there are waves.
If you are ok with 3 straps, i can olso recommend patrik f-wave, i am loving the 75lt for b&j.

An 80 or 90 litre Naish Starship from about 2017 will do exactly this. It is very fast (had mine to 34.7kts), turns, jumps, used as 3 strap or 4, can handle waves with a smaller wave fin, or pretty much anything else that I have thrown at mine. Such a versatile board.
