Things have been moving along for next years nationals at Phillip Island - we had wanted to make an official announcement before Christmas, the permits are still under application with the council. We will get back with confirmation shortly in the new year.
The dates are 1-9 March - a few states have the Labour day public holiday so this should make blocking off time from work a bit easier.
The event will also be combined with the kitesurfing wave nationals and a local SUP Vic event so there will be plenty going on.
To give you an idea of the conditions at Phillip Island - there are a huge number of beaches on different angles so nearly every wind direction is covered. These beaches offer a variety of beach and reef breaks.
Feb/March typically offers a mix of South Easterly seabreezes - cross to cross off on the beach breaks - and frontal systems which light up the reefs. Typically it will be Port tack this time of year, although there are a heap of starboard tack options as well. The open beaches towards Woolamai pick up heaps of swell so you are pretty well guaranteed waves year round.
Here are a few pics from March this year showing a few of the breaks around the island. Stay posted for another update soon.
Nice pics and it is a good location but 9 days and a days traveling either side will rule out plenty of people with jobs and or families.
What do a sup comp and the coitsurfing nationals have to do with the wavesailing nats???
More people, so better sponsors, better venues, better parties.

I'd agree with this one. Would be good to cut back to 7 and allow people weekend travel time on each side of the comp.
good stuff..
hopefully i can make this one.
can i ride my lay down paddle paddle board in the SUP comp,, i can carry a paddle if i need to.
Great location and time.
I agree with the idea of combining with other similar sports in order to improve the sponsorship and promotion of the event. Worth considering the effort the organisers need to put in, which gives them the license to make decisions that will never be liked by everyone.
Nice work Al!Hope the island turns it on so we can brag about the great conditions in vic.See you there!
Great to see the interest!
As far as the 9 day holding period goes - normally the first day of a week long event is not used for open competition to allow the more 'serious' competitors traveling time. At this point the plan would be to have everything wrapped up and completed before the 9th - if not it will be a reserve day. Pretty sure for the last few nationals the conditions have been good before and after the events. The more days - the greater the chances of really nice conditions..
As for lay down suping for you Ian I'm sure we can organize it.
Awesome work brother! Looks sick :)
Keep us posted - good work on all the work so far - appreciate all your efforts and motivation to get this happening. Ill shoot you a PM about a few things.
Yewww!!!
Any news?
Looks unreal! As great as the gerroa comps have been, it would be great to explore a different location, and Phillip Island looks like it can deliver...
Great action Al, smokin camera work and video edit as well. That has to be one of the best clips I've seen for quite a while.
Looks like Al's gonna win it! That clip was sick!
What are the chances of getting conditions like that in March?
How cold is the water gonna be??

It will still be warm in March Ben, probably about 10 degrees, you guys will be fine
Hey Al sick pics & vid mate, the place looks epic.
A few of us coming down from QLD, checking out accom,
what area do you recommend staying.
It will be so windy that the hair will blow off your chin again, finigan
hope so my chins the only place on my scone that's got any hair.
Hi Shane,
I would suggest looking around Woolamai - this area picks up the most swell so is usually the best option for surfing on the no wind days and will probably be primary contest venue as well. If you can find somewhere within walking distance for early morning surfs then you are set.
Just to keep Dan happy - the kiting element of the event has been cancelled due to problems with safety support/insurance.
Hoping the website will be finalised in the next couple of days.
Haha Dunc, there are plenty of pubs on the island.
Phillip Island Board Riders are kindly letting us use their club house for official opening & presentation etc.
There is now a Facebook page for the event - please get on there are follow for regular updates and photos.

There have been some fun days lately.
This is from a SE at Woolamai with around 1 metre of swell.
A few pics from a decent frontal system at Cat Bay last March.
shiit we have some wind and swell forecast for the start of the comp..
NSW guys you better bring some spare masts, this isn't Merimbula we're talking about here! Bring your stack hat down Dan
Just pulled up at cape woolami, and it's big very big cross shore.
I'm not keen by myself, (I'm from nsw) is there a smaller option?
