It was weird last night guessing how the Monday heats were going, simply by watching the scores update. And some heats were incredibly close. It was after midnight in the UK and I should have been asleep anyway.
On the plus side, there are great photos this morning already published, from Fishbowl Diaries, which tell us what the conditions were like.
I'm guessing it was still 'float and ride'.

The Monday report on the PWA site suggests the next two days are lays days, with Thursday or Friday now likely to be the finals days for the competition.
Stoked to see the full broadcast. I tapped out with the live stream. Will watch in full tonight!

Unfortunately no action on Thursday, it is all coming down to the last day, Friday. Fingers crossed for some conditions....

Loads of people complaining (especially on FB) and not giving suggestions on how to solve the issues. The PWA/IWT cant control the weather and waves, so not much you can do about that.. Not so long ago there was a fantastic event there. The PWA only run events where there is decent money for prize fund, organisation and coverage. The IWT run events on a shoe string. The issue is sponsorship, nobody seems to want to give much money. Maybe the viewing public should subscribe to the PWA, like most professional sports. There arent many available to watch live on free terrestrial TV.
Would you subscribe to PWA/IWT to watch it live?

The issue is not money and the conditions were pretty good really. A guy with a phone and what's app did a great job and some of the set waves were logo to mast high.
As much as i appreciate the effort made by the organisers it's patently obvious they are not too concerned with anything beyond the sailors group.
It costs nothing to put a post on Facebook with event information or post a YouTube pre show daily with interviews, weather, behind the scenes all recorded on a phone. These things are easy to execute if there is a desire.
end of the day it's whatever the organisers want to make of it. I really enjoyed what I go to watch but do feel there are low hanging fruit if the iwt want to make it resonate with spectators.
Windsurfing is an amateur sport. IWT focuses on the event itself and not so much the promotion of the event. If there is no money it's a solid choice as the events are financed by the sailors entry fees. You can argue that without better media, financing will not improve, but the flip side to that is that they had better media before and the financing didn't improve. If they don't pay to fly Duncan out then there is enough money to pay a videographer, but then there will be a load of moaning about the standard of judging. I am not sure that there is a real understanding of the amount of work it takes to put on a comp, it's a lot and its stressful and tiring and being done on a shoestring. So comments like "it costs nothing" to do this or that are misplaced, it costs a lot, it's extra work, organisation, stress.
There is not an easy answer, money will help solve it, but honestly, where is it going to come from?
Ben and Paul from Windsurfing TV tried their best today to give a commentary with what little information they could obtain from someone with a phone on the beach sending the odd video. In my books they did a better job than anyone else because there was simply no one else.
It was 6 hours and is on Youtube.
PWA was blaming the IWT for no coverage. I think that the Maui council should have given the PWA and IWT far more time and done more for the comp rather than restricting the times etc. They said that when it started it had to be continues and was only for 5 days straight. With whats gone on in Maui this year I thought they would be grateful of some income etc from all the people attending it.
Anyway good on Ben and Paul for doing what they did. Although it was 3am for Ben so he did start talking nonsense for a while.

It's hardly misplaced. We saw what a shoe string budget achieved today with a guy and a phone. Thinking it's all too hard and needs some level of technology that's unattainable to the average punter is just not the reality.

Yeak ok, a phone gives the same incredible pictures as a drone which are 10 a penny and accommodation on Maui is about the same going rate as downtown Woolawongalonga.

Been watching windsurfing at hookipa since early 80's, none of it recorded with drones and all of it incredible. Go figure hey.
Anyone else think that the PWA are distancing themselves form the IWT events so they dont get stick for the poor media coverage, want to highlight the difference in coverage between the 2 of them? They used to ban sailors from competing on the IWT tour, as the PWA wanted to ensure the events were well run and decent media coverage, and importantly, gave the sailors decent money. Thats right, the pros are paid. The winner of IWT Peru got $500 iirc. I think the IWT is a very good tour for amateurs, but most just do 1 event as a holiday.
