Got out today in 20 to 25 knots on 4.2m d-flow on 7'8" DW board and 1450 whizz foil.

I was fully lit in the 25 knot gusts but no issues leaning entirely on the front lines. No front edge collapsing and popping back out.

How does it pack away compared to BRM?

The BRM 5.1 packs down smaller than the 4.2m (the d-flow uses a heavier material).

Pack down size is a pretty important feature when selecting a parawing. Is that with the lighter weight material they are switching too? Was this a production version?

I believe it is the production version ....

Ah bummer. Still looks like a solid option especially at the lower price. Hopefully BRM will go on sale again I need a 3m and think I will just stick with BRM as pack down size is a big one for me, goal is just to use it a few times per session to hook into the dw bumps.

I just ran the BRM 5.1 and D-flow 4.2 back to back in some light wind conditions and BRM has more grunt and flies a little better. Both BRM's larger size and lighter materials made the difference. Provided you use the BRM in the recommended wind range, it is a great parawing.

Gav from hydrofoil academy said that you should not parawing in the surf. What are everyone's thoughts about that?

You don't want to have breaking waves behind you until long after it's fully collapsed with the lines wrapped up nicely and the whole thing in a single bundle in one hand with no dangling lines and fabric. Then I don't see the problem. It becomes like regular surf foiling. Pump out to get clear ideally. If you come off, hold on to your bundle tight, get on the board, stash the wing fully (you probably want to have a belt or a stash vest or something to stuff it into) and prone paddle back out. No drama. Far rather this than an inflatable wing in the same situation - I for one avoid winging into the crunch zone.

You probably don't want to try redeploying the parawing in the crunch zone - if that goes wrong you have a situation.

Where the parawing works worse than a regular wing for surf is getting onto a wave in the first place, in cross to cross-off conditions. With a regular wing you can pick your spot, line up perfectly and flag out. With a parawing, it's very hard to stow the wing without bearing off downwind to collapse and wrap. This makes getting onto the wave much harder as you're simultaneously dealing with packing up the wing and trying to get the right angle and timing for the wave you're trying to catch without necessarily having the ideal position and trajectory. You lose a lot of ground downwind in the process, which means you may end up on the wrong part of the wave.

thank you, great insights

Just received my 3m d wing. The canopy material seems very similar to my brm. I wander if they switched to a lighter material on the production wings. Construction looks nice. It has little mini ribs in between the big ribs. Packs down fine.

I read somewhere they did drop the weight of the fabric for production.

Gavin confirmed that in the video review posted earlier in this thread: 38 to 32 grams Skytex. It's worth watching the whole review.

Some background here about 32g Skytex: sky.lentea.com/news-top-en/paraglider-fabric-more-to-it-than-meets-the-eye.html

More messing about with the D-wing. Been curious about standing up, because like Piros, my knees are shot.

Yeah, I reckon that's what I look like getting up off my knees...

I'm sure it is much harder than he makes it look but I like the knee free start BRM Greg does here:

It's amazing the difference in standing when my knee injections are working at max. I go from 90 year old man to 20 year old. It's so awesome. It's unfortunate the limitations on injections.

For me, daily dose of liquid flaxseed oil has kept my knees grind/bind free. This foiling caper sure needs flexibility and good knees
