Would Caloundra bar be the best wave sailing location for Sunday 25kn Southerly forecast?
Bar is bump and jump more than wave riding unless it's SW wind which cleans up waves for riding. Still fun spot to sail when the wind is up.
I would be careful, still alot of debris in channel. Heard a horror story about some tourists almost coming into grief with board/body piercing dead trees on northern end....
Will play on the outside for the time being, high tide only. Give it some time (season or two) and bar will move north. Clearing the remainder of vegetation from the old part of northern island.
Should get back to what it was in the eighties, flat water and wave heaven
Thx for the heads up. Was such a killer spot in the 80's/90's.
Did the issue happen on the northern end of bribie or northern side of bar.
Not sure atm but may end up at happy's on Sunday. Won't be early.
Keen to sail northern bribie beach south of bar but tides not right Sunday till late
No way would I sail along here! Lots of speeds bumps! Done 3 checks of the area. Way too much risk and if you stuff up - no one is near by to help.
Can any recent windsurfers share what it is like there now? Is there still any good speed sailing in the Northern puddle or do we need to rig near the boat club and sail in the southern puddle and bar? Looks like the crossing between puddles is starting high and dry?
I've been sailing there a fair amount over the past month. Northern pond primarily. People still speed sailing there in a northerly.
i walked the southern side 2 weeks ago. There are a couple of logs here and there but it's much cleaner than 4-5 months ago.
always people at the bar when I'm there so it's getting used a lot. Still water flowing through the crossing at mid to high tide.
i read an article today about the break through and they said tides are typically 20cm lower and 30cm higher than before the break through. This is more inline with the ocean heights
I sail at the gap regularly -> my main concern is to not go out when it has rained heavily within the last few days as there are lots of sticks in the water, and the water isn't safe to ingest ( ask me how I know... )
I am leery of big-outgoing-tide as there is quite a bit of water moving flowing out. It is possible to sail, just stay out of the channel. You are on your own with no one to see you drift away.
A nice surprise is the depth - at low tide you can stand up almost everywhere (obviously not in the deep-blue). Some places are so shallow you will hit the bottom.
SE is really good - no wave riding, but there is some good jumping action; there is typically flat water with a ramp.
Sourtherly can be ok wave riding if there is a bit of swell around, but somewhat gusty on the inside - better to choose a larger board.
NE'er is very rough water, quite gusty... it has to be East-NE to be ok, but still quite rough.
I haven't tried the winter SW'ers.
If the wind is SE you can rig up at the Motorboat club and sail across on a single-tack; otherwise rig up at the Cadets and walk across. Do be aware of the depth of water across the bar. You can also launch in the Pond and sail+walk up... it is bit of a mission, but it is possible.
A "nicely powered" sail size on the inside or in the Pond, will be very powered up on the outside - typically there are a few knots more.
Best board choice is freewave to match the sail size. Since it is flat-water a slalom board is great for the big airs.

Last 2 months done about 400km sailing there - some changes definitely. Speed sailing is ok but short runs in NE and SE due to the banks increasing. Have ventured over the new opening but only surfing not sailing. There is a few trees logs still here and there - best to scope it out at low tide so you got an idea of any hidden speed bumps. The NE run at high tide is about 700m at its shortest and almost 1 km i guess if you head upwind a bit. Have a look at tracks on KA72 to see where people are sailing at Golden Beach.

A lot of wing dings there ............
Did some runs on the eastern side of the bank parallel with the new bar - great fun!
That looks nice, launching at the power boat club?
Nup- Golden beach. But launching at Power boat/Military Jetty would be ideal.
