Imax, so many questions.
Closed cell foam is around 30kG/m^3, it's that blue extruded stryene. I made a couple of boards with it years ago.
I've been putting it around inserts, for extra strength and as a water barrier in case they come loose.
So it will allow me to put cutouts in later without having to vacuum sandwiches in. A couple of layers of glass will do fine.
I'm designing this board in the hope it will have a 13 to 20kt planning range. I want it to gybe well for alphas.
So it will have standard tuck mid section.
I think I'll be fine with a 23cm deltoid of some description, especially if Elmo can use that size on a 92cm board.
The rear deck will be very convex, with fine rails. wide boards with shallow fins, slide in high G turns, because the fin starts to leave the water. I want a lot of rail bite, to start taking over from the fin, so the rear rails will look more like a wave board.
This will also create a good angle for the back feet.
Well that's the intention at the moment.
Hi Decrep,
Tee stringers are easy and hold the rocker while building.
I use a jig saw blade with 35mm long cut, run it down the blank middle (or either side of fin box position in your case) to 1400mm.
110mm wide Cf strip, wet out and poke it into the slot with a steel blade, flatten the remains on the hull, 48gr glass and lay on the PVC.
Like you, I use XPS for all the insert surrounds. Good waterproofing.
My latest (2022) light air board is 73x240x112 lit . 495 tail, 514 nose, as Bugs says. nose width.
Hi ya Mike, I think there's no issues with a wide board and a large Fangy fin. My Carbon Art is 78 wide and the 28 works well even in small chop and you can tail the board. Really good for going fast too. I would allow a bit more track in the rear to bring the rig back. I love a bit more in mine.
Thanks guys,
Yes Kato I plan on putting the track a tad further back.
I still haven't quite made up my mind how to do the stiffeners.
The mistral blown bottom I repaired had them D'cell and glass, but they had fractured, maybe when I pulled the bottom off. I think D'cell will be OK, but with carbon edges to make them really stiff. So carbon rovings in first then D'cell wrapped in glass, with any excess flared out onto the bottom.
So today, picked up the blank from Future foams.
Notice length and width are a precise cut, but thickness is shy 2mm.
I'm not complaining as, with the Bugsy reduce rocker, I had plenty of thickness to spare.
Then I visited Mark, nice professional looking place he's got at 2nd wind.
As my workshop isn't optimised for board making, (mainly because I've filled it with too much junk), and my brain keeps getting important steps wrong, I'm lacking confidence in getting the board in the vacuum bag before the resin goes off. So I've asked Mark to do the top sandwich and glass it for me.
I think I can get the bottom d'cell on as that's much less complicated, so once I've done that and shaped the deck and rails, Marl will take over.
So this board will be a real collaboration,
Bugs helped me design the board, Mark is going to do the deck sandwich and glass, Using Flex's technique Fangy will be fin experimenter.
Am I then justified in calling it a Wave Wands, How do I credit everybody else?
Once I git the board to the workshop, I made a bit of progress.
Hot wired top and bottom, cut out the rails, and did some preliminary fairing, it still needs a little bit more, the outline isn't quite sweet.
Tomorrow I have to visit Bunnings and get another surform, no idea what happened to the old one, like a lot of things these days, I can't find it.
Tomorrow, finish fairing the rails, shape the bottom, put the closed cell foam and stiffeners in.
Check the vac bag still works, and hopefully get the bottom sandwich on Wednesday.
We'll see, I normally don't get as much done as I think I will.
Thanks mate..... Good luck with the Surform as aussie stock has been low for a long while and Bunnings struggle with stocking actual hardware, it will be worth a ring around unless the green shed is close for you
their website says it's in stock here, but that can lie, if it isn't I'll check out A1 hardware and salvage.
From my relatively newbie to it all status, I wound up with a fangy 28 for my 92cm SLW through serendipitous events and found myself at green island for my first time on a short wide board.
Was good. Survived.
Lots more riding on the board the following season with pointers and I still love the feel of the board with 28ff.
Side note: I dig light wind sailing at speed zones. I reckon it's a great way to learn.
Getting a go at GI, LG and Budgy gave me a look at what speed sailing is, without going too fast in hectic wind, and it blew my mind.
I'm 65kg.
Decrepit you are different league to me but just wanted to say, for learners, fabulous kit for introduction to speed zones in ultra light wind I reckon.
How can anything under 85cm wide be called a light wind board
quite easy, I'm around 70kg, don't use anything bigger than a 6.6, min windspeed for me is 13kts. this board should start planning in my min wind, so for me it's a light wind board.
All things are relative.
My normal is a 5.7 on a 48 wide in ^18kts
First thing I did today, was load it into the wagon to see how it fits.
Looks good/
With the tailgate closed there's a centimeter or 2 clearance. So I'm happy with that.
But as anticipated things don't go as fast as I think. there's epoxy set times to take into account.
I was thinking of getting the closed cell foam on the tail as well as the stiffeners today.
However, the tail piece needs to be on and bottom shaped, before stiffeners go in. So at the moment, I'm waiting for the resin to go off.
Sorry no more pics, I was a bit distracted, I'll get more tomorrow.
How can anything under 85cm wide be called a light wind board
Easy. At 88kg and a 9 mt I'm planning in 8-12 kts on a 120/78 . Ya just need a Fangy Fin
No pics, but I made a bit of progress,
Shaped the bottom, subtle W forward, dead flat under footstraps, slight tail rocker with small V.
Prepared and cut out channel for stiffeners.
Cut out D'Cell, well it may be gurit, I've lost track.
Cut out cloth to go under the sandwich. carbon in the impact zone, to help the stiffeners and try to prevent -ve rocker developing.
Then tested the vacuum system, it's bean a while since I used it. I couldn't find the flyscreen section I use to seal the opening, so I improvised something else. Seems to work good enough.
So I should get the bottom sandwich on tomorrow, then shape the deck Friday.
More progress, this morning the boards in the bag.
One thing evident here, --- tidiness/clutter, doesn't improve with age.
Some how 2 textas and a roll of carbon rovings disappeared this morning.
10 points if you can spot them in the pic.
There is one texta on each ear and your holding the carbon roll.
I love the wooden toolbox with the old saw in it. I bet there is also a tooth setting device and a file to sharpen the teeth .

Invite Pepe around, he won't be able to resist cleaning up for you ??

Yep, somewhere, just have to find it. There's 3 blunt saws leaning against a wall, waiting for that to happen.

Nup my brother inlaw came round and did exactly that, couldn't find anything for months
Board out of bag, looks good.
got the bottom rails shaped, next step to shape the deck, maybe over the weekend, but I think there's a bit of a seabreeze going to happen.
Bit more exciting today, starboard rail just about shaped, port rail half way there.
Rails are a bit thin at the moment, because there's another 3mm to go over them, when I hand it over to Mark.
So after the rails are shaped, I add the blue foam underneath the mast track and any footstrap plugs not covered by the tail section.
Not sure how I'll go tomorrow, there may be wind, we'll see.
fab to watch it all start to come together Mike. Thanks for the pics - I use all my big words understanding up over on 'Shooting the Breeze', so I am loving pics.
Fully agree with Fangman, love the pictures and the progress reports.
Do I understand it right that you replaced all the white foam in the tail section with XPS, down to the bottom sandwich?
Yep, I wouldn't normally do that, but if I want to experiment with cutouts, I don't have to use pvc, I can just use cloth.
More talk than work this morning. Bugs dropped by to give his seal of approval, and and another mate came by to talk about building a SUP.
However I did get the other rail shaped, then weighed it.
I can't wait to bag on the deck and screw it up for you
Do you use screws to hold the deck on , what about rust ?
Do you use screws to hold the deck on , what about rust ?
Vaseline, impregnated into the fiberglass, under vacuum, or titanium screws.
There's an answer for everything if you ask the right AI
